October 9: The Howling by Pino Donaggio

The 1981 werewolf movie THE HOWLING was the second collaboration between director Joe Dante and composer Pino Donaggio following 1978’s PIRANHA. THE HOWLING helped reinvigorate the lycanthropy subgenre by moving it away from gothic period pieces and into then-contemporary storytelling. The score is distinctly Donaggio especially in its use of high strings; several passages of THE HOWLING are comparable to Donaggio’s score to 1976’s CARRIE. This film also had a seedy sexual element which is evident in the music. The original soundtrack was released in 1981 by Varese Sarabande. An expanded edition with Donaggio’s full score was released by La-La Land Records in 2005 and included bonus tracks and source music.

October 8: IT (1990) by Richard Bellis

1990’s IT was a television mini-series adaptation of Stephen King’s novel. One of the film’s great assets was the score by Richard Bellis. IT did not invent coulrophobia but the story did exploit that fear and Bellis’ music gave circus sounds a sinister twist. The story of IT intermingles the fears and formative experiences of youth and connects them to adulthood. The score has a wistful quality that suggests nostalgia tinged with tragedy while the surging music of Pennywise’s attacks has a relentless quality. Intrada released a two CD version of the full score of IT. An abbreviated release featuring selections of the score was issued by WaterTower Music in 2016.

October 7: JAWS 2 by John Williams

After scoring the original JAWS, John Williams returned for the first sequel. The studio mandated that JAWS 2 be “the same but different” style of sequel and this is reflected in the music. Williams carried over the shark theme and the track “The Menu” recalls a similar piece for the first film playing over a montage of tourists. However, JAWS 2 also includes new material, namely the sailing music for the teenagers which Williams later reworked into the theme for NBC News, and there are some poignant moments such as the track “The Open Sea.” The original soundtrack album for JAWS 2 was released in 1978 and Intrada issued an expanded edition in 2015.

October 6: POLTERGEIST (1982) by Jerry Goldsmith

1982’s POLTERGEIST was a haunted house film directed by Tobe Hooper and written and produced by Steven Spielberg. The supernatural activity starts innocuously enough but gradually escalates into terror. Jerry Goldsmith’s score has some intense and frightening pieces especially “Escape from Suburbia” but there is also an ethereal quality to the music, especially as heard in “Carol Anne’s Theme” and “The Light.” The original soundtrack album ran 38 minutes and included a cross section of the film’s music. In 1997 Rhino released an expanded version of the soundtrack and in 2010 Film Score Monthly released Goldsmith’s full score along with music from THE PRIZE.

October 5: THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW by Richard O'Brien

THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW is the de facto cult film and its ongoing popularity is largely to do with Richard O’Brien’s music. Popular tracks include “Science Fiction Double Feature” and “The Time Warp” and “Sweet Transvestite.” The final song, “Super Heroes,” was omitted from the original USA theatrical version but it has been restored for subsequent releases. The original 1975 ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW soundtrack featured 14 tracks. The 1989 edition included two alternate versions of “The Time Warp.” The twenty-fifth anniversary edition released in 2000 had 19 tracks and the fortieth anniversary edition released in 2015 had 20 tracks. These later editions included "The Sword of Damocles" and “Planet, Schmanet, Janet” but omitted the alternate iterations of “The Time Warp.”

October 4: THE CHANGELING by Rick Wilkins

1980’s THE CHANGELING (not to be confused with Clint Eastwood’s 2008 film or the 2023 TV series) is a haunted house film about a husband and father grieving the tragic loss of his family. The score by Rick Wilkins does not play to typical haunted house music tropes. It emphasizes pathos and mystery over terror although a hint of menace lurks under the music. The score from THE CHANGELING wasn’t released until 2001 in an edition from Percepto Records limited to 1000 copies. A longer edition, also limited to 1000 copies, was released in 2007. A 4K Blu-Ray edition of THE CHANGELING released by Severin Films in 2022 also included the soundtrack CD.
