Let’s talk about one of the most common questions I get:
“How much does it cost to start a school?”
And the real answer is…
It depends...
but not in the way people think.
First: Yes, the model matters
Charter Schools
• Public, tuition-free
• State funding comes after approval
But what people don’t realize is…
You still need startup capital BEFORE approval for things like:
• planning and application development
• consultants/support (if needed)
• early hiring or stipends
• initial operational setup
Private Schools
• Independently funded
• May be supported through:
– tuition
– private pay
– scholarships (in some states, like NC Opportunity Scholarships)
– donors or grants
So while families may receive funding support…
That does NOT eliminate the need for your startup capital and financial plan
Now here’s the part most people miss
The question is not just: “How much does it cost?”
The real question is:
“What is my strategy for funding, sustainability, and growth?”
Because I’ve seen people:
• open with money… and still struggle
• start small… and build something strong and sustainable
Here’s the truth I teach founders:
You can start smaller than people think.
But you cannot skip:
• financial planning
• enrollment strategy
• operational structure
• sustainability thinking
Because when those pieces are missing…
That’s when costs spiral, timelines get pushed, and schools struggle after opening.
So instead of asking:
“How much money do I need?”
Start asking:
“What do I need to build something that actually works?”
If you’ve been thinking about starting a school, I’m curious:
What’s the number you’ve had in your head?
Drop it below 👇🏾
(And be honest... I want to see where people are starting from.)
Over the next few weeks, I’m going to keep breaking this down so you can move forward with clarity and a real plan.
