I keep seeing conversations about postpartum psychosis lately, and I really think there’s a huge misunderstanding about what it actually is.

Postpartum psychosis is not the same thing as postpartum depression or postpartum anxiety. It’s a severe psychiatric emergency that can involve delusions, hallucinations, paranoia, confusion, mania, and a genuine loss of contact with reality.

And I think that distinction matters… especially when we’re discussing cases involving postpartum mental illness.

You can recognize that someone committed a horrific act while also trying to understand what severe mental illness can do to a person’s ability to perceive reality. Understanding postpartum psychosis isn’t the same as excusing what happened.

I also think we do mothers a disservice when we lump PPD, PPA, and postpartum psychosis together as though they’re different degrees of the same thing. They aren’t.

There needs to be so much more education surrounding postpartum mental health… not only for mothers, but for spouses, families, medical professionals, and the general public.

Do you think postpartum psychosis is misunderstood because so many people confuse it with postpartum depression?

Day 12 without power after the derecho in northwest Indiana, and I think we’ve officially reached survival mode. 🫠

The house is upside down, the cleaning can wait, and any motivation I had left disappeared somewhere around day 2. šŸ˜… At this point, I’m just incredibly thankful for our generator keeping the fans running and our phones charged.

I had never even heard the word derecho before this happened. Now it’s a word I don’t think I’ll ever forget.

12 days without electricity with five kids was definitely not on my summer bingo card. 😭 Here’s hoping we’re getting close to the end of this. šŸ¤žšŸ¼ The laundry pile has officially developed its own ecosystem. We don’t talk about her. 🫠

I had never even heard the word derecho until we experienced one for the first time.

This is what I saw from our window before I ran back downstairs with my family. I don’t think I’ll ever forget how quickly the sky changed or how terrifying those few minutes felt.

Now we’re on day 10 without power, heading into day 11 tomorrow, and our current restoration estimate isn’t until August 25th. 🄲

Northwest Indiana was not prepared for this. I definitely wasn’t either. šŸ•ÆļøšŸ¤

What is a derecho? A derecho (pronounced roughly ā€œdeh-RAY-choā€) is a large, fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms that produces widespread, damaging straight-line winds.

The big distinction is that it’s not a tornado. A tornado’s destructive winds rotate around a relatively narrow area. A derecho can produce intense winds across a huge swath of land, sometimes hundreds of miles long, as the storm system races forward.

To officially be classified as a derecho, the wind-damage path generally needs to extend at least 400 miles (650 km), with widespread damaging gusts of 58+ mph, including several well-separated gusts of 75+ mph.

That’s why derechos can cause such enormous power outages: instead of one small tornado damage path, trees, poles, and power lines can be damaged across an entire region at once.

Northwest Indiana was NOT prepared for this. Especially me. Well… besides the fact that I’m whimsy enough to own an unreasonable amount of battery-operated candles. šŸ˜‚ I didn’t even know what a derecho was until we lived through one.

Day 9 without power. At this point I don’t even remember who I was when we had electricity. šŸ•ÆļøšŸ˜

Coming from someone who’s been a content creator for 9 years now, I’m embarrassed. This is the content I can offer you right now. Ignore my home…. I told myself I’m not cleaning until we have power.

Another year of homeschooling is almost here, and I honestly don’t know how summer went by so fast. 🄹 I’m not quite ready for it to end, but I am so excited to watch my boys grow, learn, and discover new things this year.

One thing that surprised me last year? We didn’t use our homeschool room nearly as much as I expected. I still absolutely love having this space, but most of our lessons happened around the kitchen table or curled up in the living room. There’s just something so cozy about learning wherever life happens.

I think we’ll be starting after Labor Day this year. šŸ¤

When do you start school? And if you homeschool, when are you planning to begin?
