In 2016, Saltwater Brewery in Florida teamed up with a New York agency and a Mexican supplier to create edible, biodegradable six-pack rings made from spent barley and wheat. Unlike plastic rings that endanger marine life, these “Eco Six Pack Rings” (E6PR) safely degrade in water and can even be eaten by animals.

The idea quickly gained global attention, with outlets like National Geographic and Time praising it as a potential game-changer in beverage packaging. Saltwater’s president summed it up simply: instead of killing animals, the rings could feed them. By 2018, E6PRs appeared in Publix and Whole Foods, winning design awards and inspiring larger brands to explore similar solutions.

The project became a symbol of how small breweries can drive innovation and raise awareness about ocean pollution.
