800 Feet Above the 508: The Secret High Ground of North Worcester 🌌

While the crowds head to the airport or Vernon Hill for their "skyline shots," the real ones know that the true high ground is found right here at the top of Chester Street.

Standing at an elevation of approximately 800 feet, the Chester Street Water Tank is more than just a massive blue and white utility—it’s a towering landmark of North Worcester. Built circa 1960 and given a major rehabilitation in 2019, this tank is the "beacon" for the Summit and Burncoat areas.

A Different Perspective: When you look south from the base of the tower, the Worcester skyline does something unique, it "compresses." From this vantage point, you can see the downtown medical towers and the Mercantile Center perfectly framed against the rolling hills of the city's south side. Unlike the busy overlook at Bancroft Tower, this view is a quiet, neighborhood secret.

Why It Matters: It’s not just about the view; it’s about the "Pulse" of our city's utilities. This tank plays a critical role in the City of Worcester's Integrated Water Resources Management Plan, providing the essential water pressure required for the high-elevation homes in our district.

For many of us in the 01605 and 01606, catching the glow of the city lights behind this structure is a nightly ritual. It’s a view that defines our corner of the map.

Did you know Worcester’s crown jewel was a pigeon coop for 30 years? 🏚️➡️🏰

It’s hard to believe when you look at Union Station today, but in 1972, the doors were locked, and the lights went out.

🚂 The "Amshack" Days: As the highway (I-290) went up, the station went down. For nearly three decades, if you took a train to Worcester, you didn’t walk into a grand hall. You walked into a tiny, one-story brick "shack" next door.

Meanwhile, the real station sat rotting. The stained glass shattered, the marble crumbled, and the ceiling was wide open to the rain and snow. It was a ghost town in the middle of the city.

🏗️ The Comeback: It survived the wrecking ball by inches. It took until 2000 (and $32 million) to bring those twin towers back to life.

Proof that in Worcester, we don’t just tear things down—we build them back better.

Question for the OGs: Who remembers buying a ticket in the "Amshack"? 🙋‍♂️ Tell us your story in the comments.
