Model of a Cattle Census
Middle Kingdom, 12th Dynasty, ca. 1981-1975 BC.
Tomb of Meketre (TT280), Sheikh Abd el-Qurna, West Thebes.
Now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo. JE 46724

This large model shows a courtyard where the inspection of cattle took place. Meketre, his son, and four scribes sit under a columned canopy with scribes and guards standing nearby.

Soldiers visit the Tomb of Mereruka during World War I, 1918.

The soldiers are sat upon the steps leading up to the "False Door" within the Mastaba of Mereuka. A figure of Menreruka strides forth.

These "False Doors", were believed to be portals between the world of the living and the dead. The statue of Menreruka, represents him, deceased, and coming forth to receive the offerings which would be left for him.
