WORCESTER, MA — A local psychiatrist who previously practiced on Nantucket has been sentenced to four years of probation following his 2023 conviction for illegally prescribing dangerous combinations of addictive medications, federal prosecutors announced Thursday.

Dr. Mohamad Och, 69, was also ordered to pay a $30,000 fine, according to a statement from U.S. Attorney Leah Foley. The sentence was handed down by U.S. District Court Judge Margaret R. Guzman.

A federal jury convicted Och in November 2023 on three counts of unlawful distribution of a controlled substance following an 11-day trial.

Och, who owned and operated Island Counseling Center in Worcester, had authorization to prescribe Schedule II through IV controlled substances. Prosecutors said he repeatedly issued prescriptions for a combination of benzodiazepines and stimulants “outside the usual course of professional practice and not for a legitimate medical purpose.”

Between August 2016 and February 2017, Och wrote prescriptions for Adderall (a Schedule II stimulant) and Xanax (a Schedule IV benzodiazepine) to undercover federal agents, prosecutors said.

Trial evidence highlighted the health risks of the drug combination, including the serious cardiovascular effects of amphetamines and the dangers of mixing a stimulant like Adderall with a depressant like Xanax.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Och failed to perform psychiatric evaluations, request prior medical records, or conduct diagnostic testing—including urinalysis and bloodwork—before prescribing the medications. In some instances, he ignored red flags suggesting the undercover patients were diverting the drugs.

“He did not discuss side effects, symptoms, or risks with the patients, despite documenting in medical records that he had,” prosecutors added.

Och has since been placed on probation and is subject to additional oversight.

WORCESTER, MA — One of the two teenage daughters of a Brazilian mother arrested by federal immigration officers in Worcester remains missing, while the other has reportedly traveled to Brazil, according to police and a family attorney.

The 13-year-old girl was last seen in the custody of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF) on July 20. She has since been reported missing and is listed with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Worcester police confirmed Thursday they are actively searching for her and are concerned for her safety.

Her 17-year-old sister, who was also in DCF care following the May 8 arrest of their mother, Rosane Ferreira de-Oliveira, is no longer listed as missing. According to family attorney Andrew Lattrulo, the teen has relocated to Brazil to live with her older sister, Augusta Clara Moura.

The girls' mother was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents on Eureka Street in Worcester in early May. During the arrest, the 17-year-old reportedly ran toward a moving SUV where ICE agents had placed her mother. She was subsequently arrested by Worcester police and charged with multiple offenses, including reckless endangerment of a child and resisting arrest. Police Chief Paul Saucier requested dismissal of her case on May 16, though it's unclear if the case was ultimately dropped.

Lattrulo said he spoke with Clara Moura earlier this week, and she confirmed her younger sister's presence in Brazil. However, the family has chosen not to disclose the timeline or method of her travel.

Efforts to reach a DCF spokesperson for comment on Thursday were unsuccessful. Police are urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of the missing 13-year-old to come forward.

WORCESTER, Mass. — As the MLB trade deadline looms, Red Sox prospect Kristian Campbell finds himself in a familiar but uneasy position — balancing personal development with the unpredictability of professional baseball.

The 23-year-old outfielder, a fourth-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft, exploded onto the scene this April, earning American League Rookie of the Month honors. But after a tough May, the Red Sox optioned him back to Triple-A Worcester in June to recalibrate.

While top prospects Marcelo Mayer and Roman Anthony have since been called up and contributed to Boston’s playoff push, Campbell has quietly regained momentum. Since the All-Star break, he’s posted an .837 OPS with four home runs and 14 RBIs, making a strong case for a return to the majors — or attracting the attention of trade-hungry teams eyeing young talent.

"It's scary," Campbell admitted in an interview with Newsweek on Wednesday. "This is my second [trade deadline]. You just kind of keep your head on a swivel and be aware of what's going on. If someone gets traded, you want to make sure you say your goodbyes."

He added, “It opens up opportunities for some people, also.”

Campbell’s performance puts him squarely on the radar as the Red Sox weigh their options ahead of Thursday's deadline. With the club clinging to a playoff spot and eager to return to the postseason for the first time since 2021, decisions in the coming days could shape not only the team's October chances but also Campbell’s future — whether in Boston or beyond.

WORCESTER, MA — Police are searching for 13-year-old Karoline Ferreira de Moura, whose disappearance has alarmed community members and leaders amid ongoing fallout from a controversial federal immigration arrest earlier this year.

Karoline vanished weeks after her family was swept up in a high-profile immigration enforcement action on Eureka Street on May 8. During the operation, three women and a baby — all Brazilian nationals and members of Karoline’s family — were detained by federal agents. Images of the arrest, which spread rapidly online, drew sharp criticism for the manner in which it was conducted.

Since then, Karoline’s mother has remained in immigration detention in Texas, despite the fact that criminal charges filed against her in Worcester were later dismissed. In the immediate aftermath of the arrest, Karoline was placed in the care of the Department of Children and Families (DCF). But it has since been confirmed that the teenager is no longer in state custody.

“The case is complex,” said Andrés Latarugo, the family’s attorney. “She may qualify for a juvenile visa, but I think she’s very scared. Since her sister returned to Brazil, I believe the family intends to go back as well.”

Local officials and advocates are deeply concerned about the girl’s safety and the breakdown in communication about her whereabouts.

“She’s a missing child — this absolutely needs to be reported immediately,” said Sarai Rivera, a Worcester community leader and city councilor. “If she was in foster care, she probably just wants to be with her family.”

Karoline’s disappearance underscores broader concerns about how children are treated and tracked following immigration enforcement actions. As of now, DCF has not issued any public statements about how or when Karoline left their custody.

Telemundo New England reached out to DCF for comment, but no response has been provided.

This is a developing story. Authorities urge anyone with information about Karoline’s location to contact Worcester Police immediately.

LOWELL, MA— A local business owner is facing federal charges after allegedly hiding millions in payroll to dodge taxes and lower his workers’ compensation insurance premiums.

Henry Lam, 67, of Lowell, was arrested Monday and indicted by a federal grand jury on June 25, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. He is charged with failing to collect and pay over employment taxes, as well as mail fraud.

Prosecutors say Lam owned and operated HL Temporary Services, a staffing agency that supplied labor to companies throughout Massachusetts from 2016 to 2023. Instead of issuing standard payroll checks, Lam allegedly cashed client payments at check-cashing businesses and paid his employees in cash.

This method, according to investigators, helped Lam conceal over $6.1 million in payroll and skip out on more than $2.4 million in payroll taxes. He also allegedly reported falsified payroll numbers to insurance providers to obtain cheaper workers’ compensation coverage.

If convicted, Lam faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine for the tax-related charges. The mail fraud charge carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison, along with additional fines and restitution.

The case is still under investigation. More details will be shared as they become available.

NORTHBOROUGH, MA — A woman was arrested and charged with distributing drugs following a traffic stop on July 23, according to police.

Detective Kevin Fruwirth was on duty around 7:47 p.m. when another officer relayed that a suspect in custody for a weapons violation claimed Kelsie Pushee was returning from Worcester with fentanyl and crack co***ne. The informant had been read his Miranda Rights, police said.

Fruwirth spotted Pushee driving a white Honda Accord on Bearfoot Road at about 8:09 p.m. and recognized her from a prior arrest. After pulling her over, police say Pushee admitted her license was revoked but told officers she “needed to drive.” She was placed in the cruiser for operating with a revoked license.

A search of the vehicle uncovered a “pink zippered coin purse” containing a sandwich bag with several large pieces of a rock-like substance believed to be crack co***ne, as well as another bag containing a white powder believed to be fentanyl or he**in. Police also found a digital scale, according to reports.

Pushee has prior drug convictions, including a 2017 guilty verdict for distributing Class B drugs and a 2016 conviction for possessing a Class A controlled substance.

She was arrested and charged with distributing a Class B drug and possessing a Class A drug. Pushee pleaded not guilty and was held on $100,000 bail after failing to post bond. She is currently being held at the Western Massachusetts Regional Women's Correctional Center and is due back in court for a probable cause hearing in August.

07/30/2025

When it comes to professional dog training that truly understands both ends of the leash, Pack of Paws Dog Training has established itself as the premier destination for pet owners seeking effective, compassionate training solutions. Located at 26A Trolley Crossing Road in Charlton, MA 01507, this state-of-the-art facility is revolutionizing how families approach dog training with their comprehensive programs and specialized expertise.

A Training Facility Like No Other

What sets Pack of Paws apart from typical neighborhood trainers is their impressive 10,000 square foot dedicated training facility. This isn't a makeshift space in a park or a borrowed corner of a pet store—this is a purpose-built environment designed specifically for optimal dog training outcomes. Conveniently located right off Route 20, the facility makes professional dog training accessible to families throughout Central Massachusetts.

The strategic location and dedicated space allow Pack of Paws to offer something most trainers simply can't: complete environmental control. This controlled setting is particularly crucial for their specialty programs and ensures that every training session is optimized for success.

Specialists in Reactive Dog Training

One of Pack of Paws' most celebrated specialties is reactive dog training—a challenging area where many traditional trainers fall short. If your peaceful neighborhood walk turns into chaos the moment another dog appears, or if your furry friend struggles with distractions during leash walking, Pack of Paws has developed proven techniques to address these common but complex behavioral issues.

What Makes Their Reactive Dog Program Unique:

Controlled Environment: The ability to precisely manage distraction levels during training sessions

Flexible Space Management: Sometimes reserving the entire property, other times training alongside smaller classes

Simple-to-Execute Techniques: Practical methods that owners can consistently apply

Both Group and Private Options: Customized approaches based on individual dog and owner needs

The key advantage of training in a dedicated facility rather than public spaces becomes clear when dealing with reactive behaviors. Pack of Paws can gradually introduce controlled distractions, building your dog's confidence and your handling skills in a safe, predictable environment.

Beyond Basic Training: Summer Socializing and Guest Management

As summer entertaining season arrives, many dog owners face familiar challenges: the barking greeter, the persistent beggar, or the four-legged party crasher who "helps" guests with their plates. While some trainers default to the simple solution of "crate your dog when company comes," Pack of Paws takes a more inclusive approach.

Their guest management training programs focus on teaching dogs what TO DO when the company arrives, rather than simply what not to do. This positive approach allows your best friend to participate in family gatherings while maintaining appropriate boundaries and behavior.

A Team of Dedicated Professionals

Pack of Paws operates with six specialized coaches, each bringing education, experience, and expertise in their particular areas of focus. This isn't a one-size-fits-all approach—it's customized training that recognizes the unique needs of different dogs, breeds, and family situations.

What's particularly impressive is their full-time administrative staff, who are also trained professionals capable of helping families choose the most appropriate program for their specific goals. As they often hear from clients: "Wow, you have a lot to offer, and we aren't sure what to choose." This comprehensive approach ensures that every family finds the right fit for their training journey.

Professional Standards and Continuing Education

The commitment to professional excellence extends beyond client services. Pack of Paws offers a Professional Dog Trainer Program—a highly acclaimed certification course with impressive graduate success rates in the dog training industry. The next program begins in September, with a new Zoom option available for distant participants.

This dedication to training the next generation of professional dog trainers speaks to the quality and depth of knowledge within the organization. It's one thing to train dogs effectively; it's another to successfully educate other professionals in the field.

The Pack of Paws Difference

Several factors distinguish Pack of Paws from typical training operations:

Authentic Results

The trainers' personal dogs serve as living examples of their methods, and many even assist during classes and lessons. This demonstrates genuine confidence in their training approaches.

Comprehensive Curriculum

From basic obedience to specialized reactive dog programs, from puppy socialization to professional trainer certification, the range of offerings accommodates every level of need.

Family-Focused Philosophy

The emphasis on training "both ends of the leash" recognizes that successful dog training is really about building better communication and understanding between dogs and their human families.

Professional Infrastructure

The combination of a dedicated facility, specialized equipment, full-time staff, and multiple expert trainers creates a professional training environment that delivers consistent results.

Getting Started with Pack of Paws

For families ready to transform their relationship with their four-legged family members, Pack of Paws Dog Training offers multiple ways to begin the journey. Whether you're dealing with basic puppy manners, complex behavioral challenges, or anywhere in between, their team of specialists can design a program that fits your specific needs and goals.

The convenient Charlton location, just off Route 20, makes professional dog training accessible throughout Central Massachusetts. The spacious facility ensures comfortable training sessions regardless of weather, and the controlled environment maximizes learning opportunities for both dogs and their human companions.

In a world where emotional wellness has become more crucial than ever, one innovative organization is bridging the gap between human healing and canine companionship. Pawsitively 4 Pink has emerged as a beacon of hope, offering comfort through their groundbreaking Pink Paws Project—a program that harnesses the remarkable healing power of specially trained comfort dogs.

The Heart Behind the Mission

Pawsitively 4 Pink isn't just another pet therapy organization; it's a carefully crafted initiative that understands the profound connection between humans and their four-legged companions. The organization's flagship Pink Paws Project represents a unique approach to emotional support, combining the natural therapeutic qualities of dogs with structured comfort programs designed to make a real difference in people's lives.

What Makes the Pink Paws Project Special?

The comfort dog program at Pawsitively 4 Pink stands out in the crowded field of animal-assisted therapy through its thoughtful approach to emotional healing. Accessibility: The program is designed to reach those who need comfort most, regardless of their circumstances

Research consistently demonstrates that interaction with therapy animals can reduce stress hormones, lower blood pressure, and release endorphins that promote feelings of well-being. Pawsitively 4 Pink has built its Pink Paws Project on this scientific foundation, creating a program that maximizes these natural benefits.

The organization's approach recognizes that comfort dogs offer something unique—unconditional acceptance, non-judgmental presence, and an intuitive ability to sense when someone needs extra support. This emotional intelligence, combined with proper training, creates powerful opportunities for healing and connection.

Building Bridges in the Community

What sets Pawsitively 4 Pink apart is its understanding that healing happens not just in isolation, but through connection. The Pink Paws Project serves as a catalyst for bringing people together, creating opportunities for shared experiences and mutual support that extend far beyond the initial comfort dog interaction.

SOUTHBOROUGH, MA — After devastating wildfires swept through parts of Los Angeles earlier this year, the Rotary Club of Southborough stepped up to make a difference — thousands of miles away.

Thanks to the generosity of the local community and a grant from Rotary District 7910, the club raised $4,800 to support wildfire relief efforts in Altadena, California. Of that, $3,000 came directly from Southborough residents, with the remaining $1,800 provided through a district grant.

The funds were used to help feed more than 450 displaced residents and first responders following the wildfires, which destroyed over 5,800 homes and displaced more than 18,000 people. The relief event took place on May 31, 2025, at the Grocery Outlet on Lake Avenue, and was organized jointly by the Burbank Sunrise and Altadena Rotary Clubs.

The Rotary Club of Southborough extended heartfelt thanks to the community for their generosity and swift support during a time of national need.
