I've added a new skill to my proofreading skill set!
I completed a course at the Publishing Training Centre, where I learned the British system of proofreading symbols, called BSI. Bring on the on-paper proofreading projects for UK English!
The course was more difficult than I'd anticipated, but I passed with distinction!
I'm cracking open that bottle of Writers' Tears to celebrate! 🥳

I read 76 books in 2017 for pleasure (not work), and only 44 in 2018, but if I add the books I edited/proofread, that's 84 books for 2018. Not bad! Do you keep a count of the books you read? What are your 2018 numbers?

In the "April Q & A" published today, the Chicago Manual of Style reiterated its opinion on the one-space rule, and not without a bit of snark ;) :
"Q. I recognize all writing formats today say there is to be one space between the period of a sentence and the first letter of the next sentence. I believe this fails to take into account studies that refer to visual cues that assist the reading process. So I start here with you to request this be fully discussed and reviewed with the hope that we may at minimum note that two spaces are acceptable between sentences. Thank you for your consideration of this matter.
A. I’m so sorry to report that that ship sailed long ago. You are a lone voice, crying in the wilderness. Too little, too late; a bolted horse, a dollar short. No metaphor can express how hopeless this is. Our best advice to you is to look for a silver lining in the single space."
I'm a huge Scrivener fan and wouldn't ever want to write without it. If you've been wanting to try it, it's on sale right now for just $20! Highly recommended, especially if you're a plotter. :) https://store.dailydot.com/sales/scrivener-2-for-windows

Fiction editor and proofreader, helping publishers and indie authors bring great books to their readers.
I got my start in editing and proofreading in the corporate sector almost twenty years ago. I’ve always been the resident Finder of Typos, but when I wanted to make the switch to fiction in 2013, I quickly realized that being “good at English” didn’t make me a good fiction editor—not yet. I spent the next two years reading, studying, and taking classes in creative writing and story structure. In early 2015, I applied for a proofreading position with Booktrope Publishing, passed their test, and was hired. There, I combined what I’d learned with the knowledge of many other editors and learned how to be a great editor. Booktrope unfortunately closed their virtual doors in mid-2016, but I had already started my own editing business, and thankfully, many of my Booktrope clients chose to continue working with me as they pursued their indie careers.
I now work as a copy editor and proofreader for Kensington Publishing, under three of their imprints. I also work as a proofreader for another professional editor, Crystal Watanabe, owner of Pikko’s House Editing. Both hiring processes included passing their respective editing tests, so my skills are tried and true.
Though I enjoy working for a traditional publisher, I still love working with indie authors! I’m a huge fan of indie books, and there’s nothing like the collaborative efforts of working with an indie author to bring a new book to its readers. My schedule is usually booked a few weeks out, but I’m always available to take on new clients. I’d love to be part of your team.
I specialize in copy editing and proofreading, and have worked in various fiction genres. I have edited/proofread fantasy (epic and urban), mystery (police procedural), thriller, romance, literary, and supernatural fiction.
Visit my website at www.lisagilliam.com for more information and examples of books I've edited and proofread.
