A perfect day at the cantine Apicella in Tramonti. A beautiful town between the Amalfi Coast and the Monti Lattari. Such an hidden treasure that it was also forgotten by Phylloxera

We were welcomed by the owner Prisco Apicella. The hospitality was superb and we learned so many beautiful stories about some of the indigenous grapes like Tintore, Pepella and Ginestra. Tintore’s flower is just a female flower so it needs the pollen of other species to germogliate. Piedirosso is the one. Tintore is a grape local to Tramonti that was introduced to the national registry by Prisco himself. He had to win over and fight against the long and painful Italian bureaucracy.

Apicella winery although a small reality produces excellent wines. We tried the Tramonti Bianco and Tramonti Rosso that could be considered every day wines and they were excellent. The Tramonti Bianco impressed me for its floreal notes of jasmine and lemon zest .. with a great minerality and persistence on the palate. The Tramonti Rosso was a basket of cherry and raspberry.. with smooth tannins and a long finish.

But their grand Cru was the “ A’ scippata” a wine made primarily with tintore grape aged in oak for more than 1 year. The name come from the vineyard that was created by cutting a forest that was in the original lot ( scippata .. cut down , taken away ).
The wine was superb especially the 2017 vintage that was one for the ages. With a nose intense and attractive with black fruits. To***co and dark chocolate and a very harmonious palate with still tannins that would allow the wine to age other 20 years.

We had the great news that the winery would be one of our honor guests to the event that we are about to organize in the Campania region dedicated to the grapes less known to the mainstream but yet excellent and deserving to be part of it.

05/09/2021

On Thursday 5/6/2021 we completed the deep dive of Tuscany. As one of the most famous Wine producing regions we spent two sessions to talk about its wines.

Tuscany is the land of Sangiovese .. the well known grape which makes most of the region wines from Montecarlo Doc in the north to the South in the Maremma.

Most of the people don’t know that Brunello ...the grape of Montalcino ( and the iconic wines produced around the same town) , Sangiovese (which produces Chianti Classico, Chianti and Montecucco) Prugnolo Gentile which produce Vino Nobile di Montepulciano and Morellino which produces Morellino di Scansano are all biotypes of the same grape : Sangiovese.
The subtle differences in the wines are created by the different geographical locations.

Chianti being further north produces more restrained wines with Sangiovese at times struggling to ripen ( although the Global Warming is changing this ).

For this reason Chianti most of the time is a blend of Sangiovese and other ancillary grapes which soften it up. Instead the Brunello di Montalcino is mandatory made from 100% Sangiovese ( called Brunello in that area ).
There are million of reasons that don’t make all Brunello di Montalcino the same and all the Chianti the same. You must know exactly where the fruits are coming from .. there are very broad differences among the wines. That’s why sometimes you may drink a Brunello that is more complex than another one, more structured or linear ... the reason is where exactly is made from. The microclimates of the areas are extraordinary.

We learned what drives these differences .. and the good learners and wine lovers and experts now they are able to chose the right ones that please their palates.

We learned about Bolgheri and the iconic Sassicaia, Ornellaia and the famous Super Tuscans. Tuscany is one of the few regions in Italy where Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot have found a home. The Bordeaux alike wines that are extraordinary due to the much warmer and closer to the sea Bolgheri terroir .

Finally the white wine Vernaccia di San Gimignano ... the first appellation in Italy that made a DOC status . Great whites ....

And then don’t forget the Vin Santo the typical passito from Tuscany made from Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia Bianca.

So much to learn ... we are changing our formats going forward .. we will divide the know how about a region in multiple shorter classes .... so much to learn ....

So much to enjoy
