A perfect day at the cantine Apicella in Tramonti. A beautiful town between the Amalfi Coast and the Monti Lattari. Such an hidden treasure that it was also forgotten by Phylloxera

We were welcomed by the owner Prisco Apicella. The hospitality was superb and we learned so many beautiful stories about some of the indigenous grapes like Tintore, Pepella and Ginestra. Tintore’s flower is just a female flower so it needs the pollen of other species to germogliate. Piedirosso is the one. Tintore is a grape local to Tramonti that was introduced to the national registry by Prisco himself. He had to win over and fight against the long and painful Italian bureaucracy.

Apicella winery although a small reality produces excellent wines. We tried the Tramonti Bianco and Tramonti Rosso that could be considered every day wines and they were excellent. The Tramonti Bianco impressed me for its floreal notes of jasmine and lemon zest .. with a great minerality and persistence on the palate. The Tramonti Rosso was a basket of cherry and raspberry.. with smooth tannins and a long finish.

But their grand Cru was the “ A’ scippata” a wine made primarily with tintore grape aged in oak for more than 1 year. The name come from the vineyard that was created by cutting a forest that was in the original lot ( scippata .. cut down , taken away ).
The wine was superb especially the 2017 vintage that was one for the ages. With a nose intense and attractive with black fruits. Tobacco and dark chocolate and a very harmonious palate with still tannins that would allow the wine to age other 20 years.

We had the great news that the winery would be one of our honor guests to the event that we are about to organize in the Campania region dedicated to the grapes less known to the mainstream but yet excellent and deserving to be part of it.
