Jesus welcomed sinners, ate with sinners, and was even called “a friend of tax collectors and sinners.” But His welcome was never an affirmation of sin. His message was, “I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Luke 5:32).

Jesus didn’t demand people clean themselves up before coming to Him. He received them in mercy, then called them to leave their sin and follow Him. Grace welcomes us as sinners, but grace never intends to leave us unchanged.

That’s the balance: Jesus was radically compassionate toward sinners and radically opposed to sin.
