Hey Y’all 👋

This week’s video started with a spilled coffee on a MacBook and a detour we didn’t plan. Sometimes that’s how you find the best places.

While waiting for the laptop repair in Billings we stumbled across Greycliff Mill as a Harvest Hosts stop about an hour away. We expected a convenient place to park for a couple of nights. What we actually found there is going to surprise you.

In this video, you’ll get to see an underground cheese cave, a greenhouse that heats itself in all four seasons, Eric serenading a mini horse, and some hands-on pioneer-era crafting action.

Sometimes the unplanned stops are the best ones.

We’ve driven through more small towns than we could count over two and a half years on the road. These five keep coming up in conversation.

Victor, Idaho is where we spent our honeymoon 7 years ago, and we have been talking about the milkshakes at the Victor Emporium ever since. We finally returned this year and are happy to report the town and the milkshakes held up to the memory. The area also has some of our favorite free camping on the Idaho side of the Tetons, with views just as good as Jackson Hole and a fraction of the traffic.

Silver City, New Mexico has an artsy downtown, gorgeous old architecture, and some of the friendliest locals we’ve met on the road. It’s also a resupply stop for CDT thru-hikers, and close to City of Rocks and the Catwalk, a narrow trail built along an old mining pipeline through a slot canyon.

Red Lodge, Montana means huckleberry caramels from the candy emporium, art galleries lining Main Street, and pig races at Bear Creek Saloon. The town is also the gateway to one of the most beautiful drives in the country - the Beartooth Highway.

Beatty, Nevada has wild donkeys wandering the streets, an actual ghost town on its outskirts, and Death Valley right next door. We ate at the Happy B***o, where the waitress brought Tinkerbell and Maple their own hot dogs.

Silver Gate, Montana is a tiny hamlet tucked between Yellowstone’s quiet northeast entrance and the start of the Beartooth Highway, easy to miss if you’re not looking for it. The Log Cabin Cafe has served trout there since 1937, almost 90 years now.

None of these towns are hard to find. Just easy to drive past if you’re not looking for them.

Fishtail, Montana has a population of 70, and if you’ve never heard of it - no worries, we hadn’t either. The town sits in the foothills of the Beartooth mountains and the surrounding area has a ton of things to explore.

Tippet Rise is a 12,500 acre cattle ranch and art exhibit. The owners, Cathy and Peter Halstead, wanted to combine their love of nature and the arts, and make it accessible to all. Entry is free but you do need to register a hiker or biker ticket ahead of time. Dogs aren’t allowed on the property, so Maple and Tinkerbell sat this one out. The ’property is massive, plan to spend there at least half a day. We spent almost an entire day there, walked for miles and still only saw a fraction of it.

Camp was a fishing access point right on the creek in town, covered for the year by a $10 Montana conservation pass. Mornings started with a five minute walk to the only coffee shop in Fishtail, and the general store next door is the oldest continuously operating general store in Montana.

We also hiked into the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness to see an absolutely breathtaking alpine lake. Two black bears before we even reached the trailhead, then about 3 miles and 1,400 feet up. The lake at the top might be a top five for us, and we’ve seen a lot of lakes.

Hey Y'all 👋

Tomorrow's video is taking you to Fishtail, Montana. And no worries if you haven't heard of this place before - we hadn't either. This teeny tiny town with fewer than 100 residents sits in the foothills of the Beartooth Mountains and it turns out the surrounding area has a lot going on.

Our first day we spent at Tippet Rise, a 12,500 acre working cattle ranch with house-sized art installations scattered across the property. Eric and I are not art connoisseurs but we certainly appreciate it, and when we heard about this place we thought it would be a fun thing to do. Our expectations were exceeded SIGNIFICANTLY! The pieces are interesting and impressive in ways that are hard to describe: Some are functional, some are mind-bending, some make you feel things you didn't expect to feel standing in the middle of a Montana cattle ranch.

The next day we hiked to an absolutely beautiful alpine lake in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness. And yes, we saw bears! We'll let the video do the rest of the talking on that one.
