I stopped at every dollar store on the way down to hunting camp. Almost every one had something but this was the best score. A dented Red Bull, big ole thing of laundry detergent and some cola!

Places tend to store their excess, unused, or trash equipment out behind the building by the dumpsters. They just haven’t pulled the trigger on getting rid of it.
You can be the solution for them, just walk in the front door, ask to talk to the manager, and ask them if they need any help getting rid of anything they’ve got piled out back. You’ll be surprised how quickly you can fill up a trailer. And they’ll start showing you stuff in back rooms.
If it’s a chain you might get info on other stores and you might turn into the “scrap/junk” guy who they call when stuff gets built up.

Easily $50 worth of meat here. Tossed because it “expired” yesterday. But this stuff’s got so many preservatives in it and it doesn’t have to be refrigerated until after it’s opened. I already did a taste test about 2hrs ago and feel fine, no recalls either.
I tossed 2 in the cheese drawer in the fridge and the rest went into the freezer already half full of other dumpster hauls. Looks like we don’t have to buy any lunch meat for the next month!

How I pay only $0.01/mile driving an F150 ….
I opted into my utility’s TIME OF USE rates structure where they only charge $0.02/kWh for electricity used between 11pm and 7am.
My truck gets 2 miles/kWh so the math is pretty easy.
The majority of utilities offer some type of “time of use” program to incentivize customers to shift electricity usage to off peak times like the middle of the night.
Why do they do this? Because when electricity usage peaks during the day the utilities are paying the highest amount to electricity generators. If they can shift part of that load to part of the day when usage is lowest they can use their cheapest form of generation.
But it’s pretty shocking how many other EV owners have never heard of these programs. Seriously, if you’ve never looked into it, see if your utility offers it.
Now a big caveat … I can only get these rates at my house where I don’t have a driveway and my old 60Amp service panel is already maxed out ( so I can’t add another 220V line). So I’m forced to use just a standard 120V 15Amp charger, which charges my truck at a measly 1kW rate. So only part of my driving is at $0.01/mile.
But even paying my standard $0.08/kWh rate that still works out to $0.04/mile which is 4-5X cheaper than a gas F150. My true average is likely around $0.02-0.03/mile.
And I do now have a 220V 50A outlet at my business now that I moved into the new shop. With my Ford Mobile charger I get 5kW … so 5X faster charging than at home.
And I plan to install a 80A circuit and buy a proper wall mount charger in the next few months. That’ll get me to a 19kW rate. At that point I’ll be able to fully charge the truck from 0% to 100% in just 4.5hrs.
BONUS: That time of use rates program doesn’t differentiate between power used for your EV and power used for the rest of your house. So in the summer when we run an AC unit in the bedroom all night … that’s only paying $0.02/kWh too. So even with my wife and I now both driving electric (she has a plug in hybrid) our power bill only went up $30-40/month because of the time of use program.
BONUS BONUS: the next generation of EVs will be enabled with vehicle to grid tech meaning they can discharge electricity to the grid, with the power company paying you for that. When pe*******on reaches 30-50% you only need a fraction of EV owners to opt into a program like this to create a utility scale virtual battery. Perfectly pairing with intermittent power sources like sun/wind. People might have some political opinions about it but the tech doesn’t really care about that. And this isn’t science fiction, there’s already dozens of pilot projects around the world including the US, usually working with fleet operators with dozens or hundreds of vehicles.

Checked for recalls and didn’t find any … found 60 packs of em. These will make a lot of pet owners happy this Christmas, or maybe one person grabs them all … I don’t really care as long as they’re getting used and not rotting in a landfill.
Re: the recall … it’s when I find A LOT of something like this when I check recalls. These also don’t need to be refrigerated either so maybe they were just overstocked on em.

Out on the corner this afternoon, it all disappeared within an hour. A bread haul from the grocery store, 2 dives worth of pharmacy stuff (candy, cough drops, oringles, etc) and bras from the discount store. Easily $100s worth of stuff.
For me this is the easiest way to donate. My goal is to get it in other peoples hands to be used or consumed ASAP. If someone walking by wants it, great, that’s some extra money they can keep in their pocket and spend elsewhere.

Charged from 16% to 61% in 15min while doing some quick grocery shopping. It’s very convenient being able to use the Tesla chargers, those only opened up to non-Teslas over the summer.
Now before I get into the $$ numbers note that DC fast charging is the most expensive way to charge. I only do it occasionally maybe once a month, otherwise I charge at home or work where I’m paying 10-20% of what a fast charger costs.
Here’s the numbers:
- $0.53/kWh
- 46kWh in 19 minutes
- Truck gets ~1.8mi/kWh at these temps (30-50F).
- Works out to $0.29/mile … slightly more than what a gas vehicle would cost.
But … hear me out … the vast majority of people charge at home. Let’s look at my cost charging at home:
- $0.16/kWh
- Works out to $0.09/mile
But it gets even better. If I limit my charging to the hours of 11pm to 7am I get Lower time of use rates of $0.08/kWh. so that’s: $0.045/mile … 25% the cost of gas!!!
Add in no oil changes and just less maintenance in general and that’s why more and more people are going with EVs. Is it right for everyone, no. But that’s the beauty of a free economy, we all get to make our own choices.
And it’s just technology… it’s gonna get better and better and better, moores law applies.
Edit: just trying to provide real world numbers so people have a realistic sense of what owning an EV is like

It was mostly the blue bins, selling at $6 each or $5 if you take 20. This was 15 ppl over the course of 11hrs. Lots of ppl taking stacks of 20 or 40.
One of my employees was here during the day then I took the night shift 3-8pm. This was the first time they were available outside of business hours so I think that’s why a lot of ppl turned out.
I also sold some Rubbermaid mops and a bunch of little grey stacking totes too, but again it was mostly the bins. Adding in earnings from last Friday and Monday, we’ve sold $1700 worth of bins so far.

Crazy $500-1,000 find at a Firestone branch that was going out of business. This was another tip off from a follower. Thanks Dustin!
If you’re in the WNY area and your company is tossing stuff like this let me know. I’ll make sure it doesn’t go to waste and help save some room in the dumpster.

My guess is a cooler failed and this stuff came above temp for a few hours. None of it is expired. There’s probably $6-800 worth of groceries here.
Here’s what we kept:
- case pack (18) of Toll House Choc. chip cookie dough
- 18lbs of unsalted butter
- 8 blocks of 8oz cheddar cheese
- 8 containers of Parmesan
- 4 lbs of chorizo sausage
- 8 packs of the pearled and whole balls of mozzarella
- 15 various premade meat based dinners
- 12 pack if whipped butter
- 6 totes of cream cheese
- 8 8oz containers of raspberries
- A flat of strawberries
- A flat of grapes
- 1 case (12 packs) of feta
What we donated:
- 3 cases of linchables
- case pack of sliced cheddar
- case pack of Gorgonzola
- case pack of mozzarella
- 4 8packs of Gatorade
- case pack of sliced American cheese
- 2 case packs of chobani yoghurt drink
- 18 packs of cream cheese
I put it out immediately after we sorted thru it. Luckily I found it the right time of year when temps are 40-50F, so like a refrigerator outside. But I didn’t have to wait long, I put it at the corner where there’s a lot of foot traffic and people were going thru it as I was putting it out. Perfect timing with the Trump shutting off food stamps funding.k

Wonder what the story is behind this … I also think it’s
Ironic that they use the term “salvaging” when they say “Removing or Salvaging items from this dumpster is prohibited” … meaning they know the stuff they’re tossing has actual value yet they make the decision to toss it anyway.
And for anyone about to give me crap … it said smile you’re on camera … I’m just trying to follow directions.
