I am happy to see Uzbekistan investing in education in the regions and to see that the program plans a mixture of both public and private sector actors. As I mentioned before, I originally come from a rural area and the availability of good schooling changed my life and my career arc by widening my horizons and providing me with new opportunities.

Shavkat Mirziyoyev, the presidential candidate from UzLiDeP, spoke about his plans for the development of education, housing and road construction, and water supply in the region at a meeting with voters from Surkhandarya.

Uzbekistan to build 15 schools on the basis of EBRD funds (kun.uz)

As someone who was born and raised in a rural area in the Ferghana Valley, I appreciate the value of Uzbekistan trying to bring education to all its citizens, including those not in urban regions. I have also been involved in PPP legislation in Uzbekistan and so I am very happy that the EBRD has recently announced a school building program for Namangan and the Ferghana Valley based on the PPP model.

In addition, when I was helping to organize the Kamolot Youth Movement in Uzbekistan, I visited all regions of Uzbekistan and more than 400 schools. I, therefore, know that that there is potential talent not just in the major cities, but all over our country. I am glad that we continuing to try to develop our intellectual capital.

President Mirziyoyev in his speech at the EBRD Annual Meeting in Samarkand, mentioned the future establishment of an International Commercial Court in Uzbekistan. I definitely look forward to this initiative increasing the confidence of potential investors in Uzbekistan. Our country has a young population of over 35M people and Tashkent is the 4th-largest city by population in the former Soviet Union by population (after Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kiev). There are many potential opportunities here.

As mentioned previously, I attended the EBRD Annual Meeting in Samarkand. I was happy to see Samarkand, as part of the EBRD Green Cities Program, work with the EBRD to acquire electric buses and to construct an e-bus depot. The Green Cities project provides cities with action plans, infrastructure financing and capacity building so as to preserve the quality of the environment and its assets, mitigate and adapt to climate change and to ensure that policies and development contribute to overall societal well-being. We look forward to following Samarkand’s progress and to the possibility of other cities in Uzbekistan joining later on.

The Green Economy was a Focus of the EBRD Annual Meeting in Samarkand

It was a pleasure to attend the EBRD Annual Meeting in Samarkand recently. There were over 50 panel sessions, 100 speakers and 2,000 attendees, with panels on topics such as regional connectivity, trade and integration, PPP, CSO, SMEs and entrepreneurs, digital finance, FDI, agribusiness, sustainable energy, human capital, infrastructure and the green economy. In my next post, I will touch on that last topic, the green economy.
