A London jury on Tuesday convicted 67-year-old Janice Nix of manslaughter in connection with the 1978 death of her stepdaughter, Andrea Bernard, in Thornton Heath, South London.

According to prosecutors, young Andrea suffered devastating burns to nearly half of her body after being forced into a scalding hot bath as punishment. The child later died in hospital weeks after the incident.

The breakthrough in the cold case came in 2022 when Andrea’s brother, Desmond Bernard, finally broke decades of silence and revealed what he said truly happened inside the family home. Bernard told jurors he had initially repeated claims that the incident was an accident because he feared suffering more abuse.

During emotional testimony, Bernard recalled hearing Andrea crying that the bath water was “too hot” before her screams rang through the house. He later entered the bathroom and allegedly found his sister limp in Nix’s arms, with skin peeling from her body.

Medical experts told the court Andrea’s injuries were consistent with a child being forcibly held in extremely hot water.
Nix denied the charges but admitted during trial that she lied at the original inquest nearly 48 years ago. She claimed she panicked after failing to supervise the child properly.

Authorities arrested Nix at Heathrow Airport in February 2025 after she arrived on a flight from Antigua. Prosecutors said the conviction was only possible because Andrea’s brother finally found the courage to come forward after more than four decades.

The case has reignited conversations across the Caribbean and the UK about child abuse, delayed justice, and the lifelong trauma carried by survivors.
