🚨Government Launches EC$1,000 Newborn Grants Programme to Support Saint Lucian Families🚨

Regional News | St Lucia

The Government of Saint Lucia has officially rolled out its Newborn Grants Programme, fulfilling a core social protection pledge introduced by Prime Minister Hon. Philip J. Pierre in the 2026/2027 Budget. Press Secretary Melissa Paul formally announced the enactment of the policy during Monday's pre-Cabinet media briefing.

Under the newly active framework, mothers of qualifying infants will receive a one-off financial grant of EC$1,000. To maintain eligibility, children must be born on or after August 1, 2026, and their parents must legally log the birth with the Civil Status Registry within a strict six-month window from delivery.

An official statement from the administration noted that the capital injection is specifically designed to alleviate immediate child-rearing and caregiving overheads during the initial stages of a baby’s life. Beyond offering economic relief to households, the framework seeks to incentivize prompt civic registration, ensuring every newborn secures an early legal identity required for vital state documentation and services.

🚨ABDF Coast Guard Suspends Active Search for Three Missing Fishermen After Nearly Two Weeks🚨

Regional News| Antigua and Barbuda

The Antigua and Barbuda Defence Force (ABDF) Coast Guard has suspended its active search for three fishermen who have been missing at sea for nearly two weeks, citing a lack of new information to guide further search efforts.

The missing men, Rowel Martin, Gregory Questelles and Cleofoster Jarvis, were last seen on July 16 after departing Point Wharf aboard the fishing vessel Lady Madesha. They were expected to return on July 18 but were reported missing on July 20, triggering an extensive search-and-rescue operation.

Acting Commanding Officer Captain Vaughn Simon said the decision to suspend the active search followed discussions with the families of the missing men. He explained that investigators have exhausted all available leads and currently have no information indicating where search efforts should continue. Police investigations into the disappearance remain ongoing.

The search involved coordinated efforts by the ABDF Coast Guard, the Antigua and Barbuda Search and Rescue (ABSAR) team, regional Coast Guard partners, including St. Kitts and Nevis, and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Martinique.

Family members have expressed frustration over the lack of answers. Relatives pointed to the discovery of a bucket believed to belong to one of the fishermen, containing a mobile phone and food, which was found on a beach in English Harbour and handed over to police. They believe the find could provide valuable clues, while authorities have confirmed the item remains part of the ongoing investigation.

Despite the suspension of active search operations, officials have urged anyone with information that could assist investigators to come forward as efforts to determine what happened to the three fishermen continue.

🚨PM: Charged MV Barima Crew Receiving Psychosocial Support Following Tragedy🚨

Regional News | Guyana

Prime Minister Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips has confirmed that the captain and other crew members charged in connection with the deadly MV Barima disaster are receiving psychosocial support as investigations and legal proceedings continue.

Speaking on Tuesday, the Prime Minister said the support is being provided in recognition that the accused are also survivors of the maritime tragedy.

Earlier in the day, MV Barima Captain Kevin Price, also known as "KP", Chief Mate Rondell Dwayne Roberts, and Goods Superintendent Delon Granderson were each charged with murder in relation to the incident.

Prime Minister Phillips noted that, despite the charges, the three men endured the same traumatic event as other survivors and are therefore receiving the same psychosocial assistance being offered to survivors and families who lost loved ones.

The MV Barima tragedy remains one of Guyana's deadliest maritime disasters, with investigations and court proceedings ongoing.
