Taksim Square is the beating heart of modern Istanbul. Located in the Beyoğlu district on the European side, this historic public square serves as a major transportation hub, a vibrant entertainment district, and a cultural focal point surrounded by shops, cafes, and iconic hotels.
The area has a energetic, metropolitan feel that stays active well into the night. Street musicians, cafes, and dessert shops keep the district lively.

The word Taksim means "division" or "distribution" in Arabic. Taksim Square was originally the point where the main water lines from the north of Istanbul were collected and branched off to other parts of the city (hence the name.) This use for the area was established by Sultan Mahmud I. The square takes its name from the Ottoman era stone reservoir which is located along one side of the square.
