The Harm of the Tongue in Islam
✅ The tongue can lead to sin and the wrath of Allah. Because the tongue easily utters words, a person may say something that harms him in the Hereafter.
✅ The Prophet (peace be upon him) strongly warned about the tongue. He said:
> “A person may utter a word carelessly, not thinking of its consequences, which causes him to plunge into the Hellfire farther than the distance between the east and the west.”
(Hadith narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)
✅ The tongue can lead a person to:
Backbiting (talking behind people’s backs)
Lying
Spreading rumors and false news
Insulting and dishonoring others
Obscene or foul speech
✅ Islam instructs us to guard our tongues. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
> “Whoever guarantees for me what is between his lips (his tongue) and between his legs (his private parts), I will guarantee Paradise for him.”
✅ Guarding the tongue is among the noble qualities of a Muslim. Allah loves that we either speak good or keep silent.
> The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day, let him speak good or remain silent.”
(Bukhari and Muslim)
