Haizzz… wearing a wig and “non-choreographed dancing”? Qhov ntawd txhais saib ntawm lus Hmoob puas yog “Ua Dab Ua Tuag” ne? Tsaus xav kawg nkau ho!
First of all, I want to sincerely apologize to the singer of this song for taking away some of its charm, because my “dancing” was just that bad. Being criticized does sting a little, but honestly… if you look at it that way, yes, it is a bit embarrassing.
Second, if you’ve been scrutinizing every little detail, let me break it down for you: I usually film straight on, spin the skirt, from the side, from the back, close up and from afar.
So what does this mean? Is it a dance, or just a way to move and show the outfit in more detail for everyone? Maybe it just matched the music too well, so you assumed I was dancing and a bad one at that…thanks for noticing!
As for the hair, yes, sometimes I wear a wig, dye my hair, and use colored lenses. But if even a wig is considered “not genuine,” then I suppose providing costumes for professional performers is meaningless. Some audiences probably want to see a “pure” Hmong girl in films, like a documentary, rather than a professional actor wearing a wig.
Yes, I’m not entirely confident about my little crooked tooth, but in that video, it’s my real tooth. Now I even have to… prove that my teeth are real. And strangely enough, I tend to wear Hmong costumes every time I smile hehe.
While you’re judging me, take a look at yourself: how many times have you worn Hmong clothes? And what have you done to prove that you are truly Hmong, so I can know that you genuinely understand this culture?
Regarding language: since some of us no longer speak Hmong fluently, that’s also why I respond in English, to make it easier to explain to those who aren’t familiar with the culture.
I understand that everyone has their own perspective and experiences. But scrutinizing every little detail hair, teeth, or movements maybe you should look at yourself first. I just want to showcase Hmong clothing and culture honestly, bring some joy to viewers, and honor the culture I cherish.
Even if it’s not “perfect” in someone else’s eyes, if it still captures attention, sparks analysis, and commentary… then I must be more “dedicated” than they think.
📍Next month, I’ll be leaving this city for another one, closer to my community. At that point, I’ll change the look of this page and take it in a new direction. It might appeal to most people, or maybe not, since we don’t all share the same tastes and everyone has their own perspective. So if you’re still interested, please follow along for the next chapter of my journey.
Thank you all!
