Global Artists You Didn’t Know Have Vietnamese Roots: kelz

Kelz is the musical project of Kelly Truong, a Vietnamese-American singer, songwriter and producer based in California. Blending indie electronic, dream pop and alternative influences, she creates soft, immersive soundscapes built from shimmering synths, fingerpicked guitars and whisper-like vocals.

Working mostly from her home studio, Kelz has developed a sound that feels both nostalgic and quietly hopeful. After introducing listeners to her intimate world with her 2022 debut album 5 AM and I Can’t Sleep, she brought that music to stages across North America and Japan while steadily growing an international audience.

Now, she’s back with A Sweet Passerby, an album four years in the making. Inspired by grief, changing relationships, love and the search for peace, the record expands her signature dreamy sound while remaining deeply personal, most of it written and produced by Kelly herself.

Vietnam’s new generation of artists is arriving faster than you think and this might be one artist you’ll be glad you discovered earlier: CAPTAIN BOY

From The Voice Kids to King of Rap, Rap Viet and Anh Trai “Say Hi”, CAPTAIN BOY has been carving out his own space in Vietnam’s new generation of artists. Known for his catchy melodies and distinctive musical identity, the singer, songwriter, rapper and producer has also made his mark through his songwriting, production, arrangement and stage performance.

His debut release “QUÊN DẦN QUÊN” in 2024 marked another step in that journey, while Anh Trai “Say Hi” brought his name to a wider audience. As the show’s youngest contestant and one of its Top 16 finalists, CAPTAIN BOY stood out not only for his performance skills, but also for his ability to write, produce and arrange his own music.

Now, he’s back with Tinh Hà Say Hi, ready to take that sound into a new chapter.

So, are you ready to keep CAPTAIN BOY on your radar?

Tuimi’s third studio album arrives after three years of experiences, emotions and a rather unexpected reset. While the album was around 80% complete, she lost her laptop and hard drives in a robbery in Berlin, taking with them most of the project and nearly 10 years of her career archives.

Instead of giving up, Tuimi started again. Revisiting each song allowed her to decide what was truly worth keeping, eventually shaping the album we hear today.

One of the songs that survived almost untouched was “cũng chỉ là cảm xúc thoáng qua mà thôi”, a Soul/Blues track about the clarity that comes after the fleeting emotions of your 20s and 30s. It was one of the few tracks preserved on the Cloud, meaning Tuimi only needed to master the original demo to complete it.

Across eight tracks, Sau Những Lần Thương moves through everything from dreamy piano ballads and Soul/Blues to R&B, UK Garage, Jersey Club, power ballads, Funk and disco, all tied together by one question: what do we become after love, loss and growing up?

And maybe that’s why the album feels less like a record about heartbreak, and more like eight little hugs Tuimi gave herself on days when she needed one.

Which track from “Sau Những Lần” Thương are you putting on repeat?

As one of the most talked-about Vietnamese films at the box office this year, “Mr. Hero” has found success not only through its heartfelt storytelling but also through the talented individuals behind and in front of the camera.

Directed by Võ Thạch Thảo, the film marks her feature debut after years of shaping Vietnamese television with popular dramas such as “Gạo Nếp Gạo Tẻ”, “Cây Táo Nở Hoa”, and more. Known for stories centered around family, working-class life, and everyday experiences, she brings a grounded and emotional perspective to the big screen.

“I believe kindness is fragile. It only takes one betrayal, one act of deception, or one experience that shatters our trust for us to close ourselves off and begin doubting everyone around us. But the irony is that when that happens, the people who genuinely need our help are often the ones who suffer the most,” she said.

The film also features Vietnamese American producer Timothy Linh Bui, known for his work on projects such as “Three Seasons” and “Sister Sister”. With his experience in both Vietnamese and international cinema, he has helped bring Vietnamese stories to wider audiences.

Together with the cast and production team, they helped create a film that connects with viewers through its authenticity and human-centered storytelling, highlighting the impact of Vietnamese talent both on- and off-screen.
