The Nyungne practice in the Vajrayana tradition is known as a supreme method of purification, arising from the boundless compassion and sacred aspiration of Thousand-Armed Chenrezig (Avalokiteśvara).
Nyungne is a discipline of restraining the unwholesome activities of body, speech, and mind, thereby purifying the negative karma accumulated over countless lifetimes.
🌿 Nyungne is practiced in pairs—two consecutive days forming one complete cycle of purification.
𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐎𝐧𝐞 – 𝐍𝐠𝐲𝐞𝐧-𝐧𝐞: Observing pure vows, taking a single meal before noon, reciting the Great Compassion mantra, performing prostrations, and engaging in the visualization practice.
𝐃𝐚𝐲 𝐓𝐰𝐨 – 𝐍𝐲𝐮𝐧𝐠-𝐧𝐞: Maintaining complete silence, abstaining from food and drink, and dedicating the entire day to mantra recitation and prostrations in a state of inward stillness.
🌿 Gyalwa Dokhampa reminds us that understanding each part of the Nyungne practice is essential, for only through such understanding does the practice become truly meaningful and genuinely beneficial.

When the Great Compassion Mantra is recited with unwavering faith and focused awareness, the blessings become present. Through this connection, negative karma is purified, obstacles are pacified, and the mind becomes clear and pliant.
Doubt obstructs even the purification of subtle karma; but when recited correctly, even heavy obscurations are purified. Over time, the mantra becomes a direct cause for enlightenment.

This practice is not merely ritual movements; they are a profound method for purifying the karma of the body.
Each time the body touches the ground, a layer of pride is released, and the practitioner cultivates humility by bowing before the Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha.
In this gesture, the mind recognizes the equality of all beings and becomes receptive to blessings.

On the second day, the discipline of abstaining from food, drink, and speech becomes a powerful antidote to karmas born of desire, harm, and unwholesome speech.
Fasting purifies karmas linked to grasping and attachment—karmas that easily lead to rebirth in the hungry ghost realm.

Silence purifies the negative speech that causes beings to be born into circumstances where their words carry no weight and no trust.
By restraining body, speech, and mind for an entire day, the practitioner protects countless beings from harm while purifying their own obscurations.

The visualization practice reveals the entire cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. Through it, one understands the workings of karma, dispels the illusions of self-clinging, and unites the wisdom of emptiness with the appearance of form—an essential principle of Vajrayana.
🌿 When these elements come together, a single pair of Nyungne becomes a complete practice of purification: the body becomes disciplined, speech becomes pure, and the mind becomes clear, gentle, and filled with compassion. The practitioner deepens their connection with the blessings of Chenrezig and cultivates the qualities necessary for the path.
When eight pairs are practiced continuously, the momentum becomes extraordinarily strong. The Masters teach that eight pairs of Nyungne can purify heavy karma accumulated over many lifetimes, transform deep-rooted habitual patterns, reduce afflictive emotions, gather vast merit, protect from lower rebirths, and create the causes for rebirth in the Pure Land.
🌿 For those seeking a practice of authentic lineage, deep purification, and genuine inner transformation, Nyungne—especially the complete eight pairs—stands as a precious opportunity to engage in the boundless compassion of Chenrezig.
