In "Lanterns" Episode 5 ("Lights Out"), John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) believed that the Guardians deliberately withheld information and pitted him against Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). Instead of transparently replacing Hal, the Guardians forced John to take the ring by deception and force, culminating in a motel room fistfight where John physically strips the ring from Hal's finger.
Though Guardian Lianna (Laura Linney) officially anoints him as Earth's new Green Lantern, John surrenders the ring and the lantern battery back to her for several key reasons: Despite a lifetime of discipline and intense childhood training, putting on the ring makes him feel completely hollow rather than proud or powerful. John recognizes how the Guardians' manipulation completely broke Hal. As John leaves the ring on the table, he tells Lianna: "Hal betrayed everything to keep this ring. His code, the oath, even himself, and it broke him. He probably doesn't even remember why he wanted the damn thing. And neither do I." John realizes the Guardians view Earth's protectors as expendable assets. By walking away, he chooses to maintain his own moral autonomy rather than serve an untrustworthy cosmic hierarchy.

The Landlord stops Yani Neko from capturing a wild bird, only to immediately launch into a vivid fantasy about the bird transforming into a beautiful bird girl (an avian beastfolk).

Macon demonstrates that he knows personal details about John—including his artistic background—making it clear that he feels in complete control of the situation.
