ANATOMY OF AN ICE RINK: THE HIDDEN HEATING SYSTEM

Have you ever wondered what's hiding beneath the surface of a massive indoor ice skating rink? While keeping the ice frozen requires kilometers of chilled pipes, the real engineering secret lies much deeper.

To maintain the ice at room temperature, super-chilled coolant runs through parallel pipes embedded in a concrete slab. Directly below this, a thick layer of insulation blocks the cold from escaping downward.

But here is the engineering paradox: at the very bottom, a dedicated heating system must be installed. Without these heated pipes, the extreme cold would eventually freeze the earth below, causing the ground to expand (frost heave) and completely destroy the building's foundation. To keep the ice perfectly frozen above, engineers must literally heat the ground below!

To keep everything safe from the elements and potential hazards, the electrical cables never run on the outside. They are routed through a PVC conduit that goes straight up through the center of the concrete foundation and directly into the hollow core of the pole.
