What do we actually want our life here to look like?

It's very easy to choose accommodation based on the things that matter for a holiday - beautiful house, swimming pool, proximity to the Old Town, great photographs.

But staying somewhere for a month with children is different.

Suddenly you care about where you're buying groceries. How you're getting around. Where your children might meet people. Whether there's somewhere nearby for an easy breakfast. What you'll do on an entirely ordinary Tuesday when nobody wants another tourist attraction.

And that's why I think the area around your accommodation matters just as much as the accommodation itself.

After almost 10 years living in Hoi An, we've learnt that different parts of town can create very different versions of family life here.

We've put five of the things I'd consider before booking into today's post.

And if you're planning a longer stay, we go much further inside our Living in Hoi An with Kids Family Field Guide -nbuilt from years of raising a child, living here and building family community here.

It's surprisingly easy to build a childhood that looks wonderful from the outside.

The activities.
The classes.
The trips.
The projects.
The things they're learning.

And none of those things are bad. We've filled our own years with plenty of them.

But a rich childhood isn't something we can curate for a child from the outside.

Some children want more people. Some want more space.

Some want to try everything. Others will disappear into the same interest for months.

Some thrive with rhythm and structure. Others need far more room to wander.

The question isn't whether their childhood looks enriching to us.

It's whether there's enough room inside it for them to discover who they are.

And that's going to look different for every child.

What does a rich childhood look like for your child right now?

Coming to Hoi An with children for more than a quick holiday?

We made something for you.

After years of raising a child here, living family life in Hoi An and building Tay Tai, we realised there was plenty of information about how to visit Hoi An...

But surprisingly little about how to actually live here as a family.

Where should you stay?
How do families get around?
Where do children meet other children?
What activities are actually available?
Where can you spend an ordinary afternoon?
What does everyday family life here look like when you're staying for weeks or months rather than four nights?

So we put what we've learnt into one place.

The Living in Hoi An with Kids Family Field Guide.

It's for families considering a longer stay, worldschoolers passing through, families thinking about moving here, or anyone who wants to spend less time figuring everything out from scratch once they arrive.

Not a generic tourist guide.

A head start on family life in Hoi An.

If you're coming to Hoi An with kids, comment GUIDE and we'll send you the details. 💛

A rich childhood can contain extraordinary experiences.

But it doesn’t need to be made entirely from them.

It can be built from meals made together.

People who know your child.

Jobs they’re trusted to help with.

Long afternoons with nowhere to be.

Conversations in the car.

Things made just because they wanted to make them.

The same favourite place, visited again and again.

The ordinary parts of family life that don’t look particularly impressive from the outside.

Tay Tai has always created experiences for children.

But perhaps one of the most important things we’ve learnt is this.

Rich doesn’t have to mean busy.

Sometimes it’s simply about making more of the life we’re already living matter.

19/09/2026

We often talk about childhood as though it’s the waiting room for real life.

Learn this now so you’ll need it later.

Practise this because one day you’ll be responsible.

Prepare for the person you’ll eventually become.

But children are already people living actual lives.

They can contribute.

Help make dinner.

Care for something.

Solve ordinary problems.

Navigate disagreements.

Make decisions.

Create things that matter to other people.

Participate in their communities.

Not because these things will make them capable adults one day.

Because they’re capable of being part of life now.

Perhaps childhood doesn’t need to be quite so focused on preparing children for the real world.

Maybe we just need to let them participate in more of it.

Hoi An is incredibly easy to research as a tourist.

Family life is a different story.

Because once you're considering staying for a few weeks or months, knowing the best bánh mì or which lantern boat to take stops being enough.

You start wondering...

Where should we actually live?

How will we get around?

Where will our children meet people?

What will an ordinary week look like?

Where can we go when we don't want another “activity”?

And perhaps most importantly...

Could we actually imagine having a life here?

Those were the questions we wanted to answer when we created the Living in Hoi An with Kids Family Field Guide.

Not another tourist guide.

A practical shortcut into understanding what family life here actually looks like - built from years of raising a child, living here and creating family community in Hoi An.

One of the hardest things we've learnt isn't finding interesting things for children to do.

It's saying no to perfectly good ones.

Because childhood doesn't only happen in the classes, trips, projects and activities we carefully choose.

It happens in the gaps too.

The afternoon with nowhere to be.

The game that lasts 3 hours because nobody needs to leave.

The idea a child follows simply because there was enough empty space for it to begin.

A rich childhood isn't necessarily a full one.

Sometimes the space we're tempted to fill is doing something important already.

One thing conventional systems do very well is make a lot of things simply... exist.

A timetable.
A peer group.
Places to go.
Other adults.
Activities.
A rhythm to the week.

Step outside some of those systems and suddenly families can find themselves trying to recreate all of that individually.

But choosing a different path doesn't have to mean doing everything yourself.

In fact, after almost 3 years of building Tay Tai, one of the things we've become most convinced of is that community isn't an optional extra around childhood.

It's part of the infrastructure.

People to learn alongside.

Adults with different skills and interests.

Children of different ages.

Families who can organise something when you can't.

Familiar faces who keep showing up.

Freedom may give us the ability to build things differently.

But we don't necessarily have to build them alone.
