Even when we didn’t know IF we could make it happen, we started making some changes that would make it easier to leave the UK and travel with our kids for a prolonged period of time.

This didn’t just help us to save money to get going, but also gave us the proof we needed that we could budget and live a certain way while on our trip too.

Here goes:

THE HOUSE OF OUR DREAMS - moved to a house that was absolutely fine for us, but it definitely wasn’t in the area we wanted to live (it was in town and we’re country-folk!), but it was cheaper to live in and run so we could save.

A CAR ON FINANCE - We got rid of this a couple of years before we left and bought a car outright instead, selling it for around £2000 less than we paid for it at 13 years old. This worked out at around £100 a month once you consider repairs, a damn site cheaper than a car on finance!

BIG HOLIDAYS - we didn’t go on one for over a year after previously going regularly. One 10 night holiday would cost us the same as 1 month travelling! We still did camping trips, and we always say that the kids love those as much as any trip abroad anyway 🙂

BRAND NEW ANYTHING - If we needed furniture, anything for the house, and most clothes, it was second-hand. When we sold all our household items to leave, it became clear how much it all depreciates in value. For the stuff we’d bought second-hand, we sold most of it for the same amount or sometimes MORE than we’d paid for it.

EXPENSIVE MEALS OUT - We started taking food out with us for family trips, and turned down invitations for meals out with friends in favour of cheaper takeaways or cooking. Same lovely experience with friends, but wearing comfies and without the hit on the wallet.

AD | Came for the bridge, stayed for the chaos!

We’ve weighed up coming here for ages because we just weren't sure it was worth the trip to see a bridge, but my goodness, we’re glad we did!

SAVE this for your trip to Vietnam, because I definitely think the parts we enjoyed most were the ones we didn’t even know about before we came.

Here are the details:

📍 Ba Na Hills, just outside Da Nang

⏰️ Time there: We spent 7 hours here but could have stayed longer. There are hotels here too, if you’d like to stay overnight

🚗 We booked our own transport which cost 1million VND rtn from Hoi An (£28 / 38USD / 52AUD)

❄️ Oh and take a jumper! It was much cooler here than at ground level and while I thought it was the PERFECT temperature, the girls were a little chilly and were glad we’d brought their hoodies along.

We had done this in Northern Vietnam before and loved it, but these guys at the Hoi An Duckstop are so much fun and make this such a great experience!

You can put your belongings in lockers when you arrive, and change your shoes for the flip flops provided to keep your holiday shoes tidy :-)

The team are very happy to take photos/videos for you, which is lovely!

By the way, if you’re wondering where Freya is, she couldn’t think of anything worse than ducks all over her! Chalk and cheese they are, and how lucky we are to often experience 2 different worlds in a day 😍

We talk about brains ALL THE TIME in our house 😆

Because we think that knowing how it works (and how it holds you back) is one of the most important things you can learn about.

Your brain will fight you when you try to leave something familiar, even when that familiar thing is making you unhappy.

It's why people stay in jobs, relationships, friendships, locations even that they don't like, because the unknown feels too much of a risk.

That's what brains do.

You just don't have to let it make the decision for you.

You know when you go on holiday for a week or 10 days and you feel ready to go home?

That doesn't happen in Hoi An 😆 we've had several visitors here now for 1 to 2 weeks, and NONE of them have wanted to leave.

You honestly can't get bored here as a family, because there's so much for everyone.
