TURTLE LAKE – A MODERN LOTUS IN THE HEART OF SAIGON

In the midst of Saigon’s vibrant pulse lies a familiar roundabout that locals fondly call “Hồ Con Rùa” – Turtle Lake. Yet behind this everyday name is a striking monument that captures the modernist spirit of urban design in 1960s South Vietnam, and stands as a unique symbol of Saigon’s identity during the Republic era.

🪷 A lotus rising from an octagonal lake

Designed by architect Nguyễn Kỳ and inaugurated in 1969, the monument at what was then known as the International Aid Roundabout features the “Flower of Freedom” – a five-petal lotus emerging from an octagonal pool. Its design is not only modern but deeply symbolic, recalling the eight-sided citadel of Bát Quái Thành – the city’s original form – as a graceful nod to Saigon’s layered history.

🕊️ An architectural language of freedom and peace

Unlike many monuments of its time, the Flower of Freedom was not overtly political. Instead, it embraced an abstract modernist form, emphasizing ideals of liberty, global connection, and cultural fusion. Beneath the tower stood the Ceremonial Platform, oval-shaped and clad in brown mosaic tiles with white marble railings – once the site of official ceremonies and commemorations.

📍 Turtle Lake – A Symbol of Saigon and Its Historical Mysteries

🎞️ During the French colonial period, the site where Turtle Lake now stands was once an ex*****on ground where the French carried out beheadings of Vietnamese patriots. Some historical accounts also suggest that this was where the flagpole (or clock tower) of the old Gia Định Citadel once stood. In 1950, the Republic of Vietnam government built a traffic circle with a memorial monument here. But the most significant turning point came in 1967, when Turtle Lake was officially constructed under President Nguyễn Văn Thiệu’s administration. 🔏

🏛️ Why is it called “Turtle Lake”?
Interestingly, there’s no actual lake here! The original design featured a small central pool surrounded by an octagonal structure, with a turtle statue carrying a stone stele in the middle. The turtle, rooted in Vietnamese symbolism, was believed to serve a feng shui purpose—intended to safeguard political power at the time. However, in the 1970s, the turtle statue was destroyed in a bombing. Despite this, the name “Turtle Lake” has remained close to the hearts of Saigonese ever since.

One of the most talked-about legends surrounding Turtle Lake is its connection to feng shui. Some believe the structure was designed to balance Saigon’s “dragon vein” energy, helping the Republic of Vietnam maintain political control. 🕊️ June 5, 1911 – a sacred milestone forever etched in Vietnam’s national history. At Ben Nha Rong (Dragon Wharf), a young man named Nguyen Tat Thanh, only 21 years old at the time, boarded the ship Amiral Latouche Tréville, setting sail to find a path to national salvation, driven by a burning aspiration:

“Freedom for my compatriots, independence for my homeland.”

With empty hands but a heart full of purpose, he carried a great ideal, unshakable faith, and an indomitable will. Thirty years later, from this journey, he returned to lead the Vietnamese people to fight for independence and freedom, ushering in a new era for the country.

Located on the banks of the Saigon River, Ben Nha Rong was originally the headquarters of the French shipping company Messageries Maritimes, built in 1862.
