On the morning of January 19, 2026, local police and border guard forces in Hoa Xuan Commune, Dak Lak Province successfully rescued two foreign tourists who were swept out to sea while swimming at Tien Beach.
According to authorities, the incident occurred at approximately 7:40 a.m., when a group of four international visitors accompanied by a Vietnamese tour guide were sightseeing and swimming at the coastal area in Phuoc Tan Hamlet, located along the shoreline of Hoa Xuan Commune.
Two members of the group — identified as Nicholas T. (German) and V.D. (Danish) — were caught by powerful waves and dragged into a rocky area offshore. Reports say the dangerous combination of strong currents, high surf, and treacherous rocks made the situation life-threatening.
Upon receiving the emergency report, officers from the local police station quickly coordinated with the Fire Prevention, Firefighting and Rescue Police Division, border guard units, and other relevant agencies to carry out a prompt rescue operation. Despite challenging conditions, rescuers reached the tourists, brought them to safety, and transferred them to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
Local authorities emphasized that the swift and coordinated efforts of emergency personnel minimized harm and showcased the crucial role of law enforcement in ensuring tourist safety in the region.

Tuy Hoa Airport (Phu Yen Province, Vietnam) has officially been approved for an adjusted master plan for the period 2021–2030, with a vision to 2050, aiming to meet the growing demand for air travel and regional development.

According to the plan, a new passenger terminal (T2) will be constructed to the southwest of the existing T1 terminal. By 2030, the airport is expected to handle around 3 million passengers per year, and by 2050, capacity will be expanded to approximately 5 million passengers annually.

In addition, the long-term vision includes the construction of a second runway, enhancing operational capacity, safety, and efficiency. Tuy Hoa Airport will continue to operate as a dual-use airport for civil aviation and national defense, meeting ICAO 4C standards.

This expansion marks an important step in strengthening Phu Yen’s connectivity, supporting tourism growth, and boosting the socio-economic development of the region.

PHU YEN, Vietnam, Jan. 4, 2026 (Tuoi Tre) — Vietnam’s 5th Military Region on Sunday handed over newly built houses to families affected by recent floods in Phu Yen, following more than a month of implementation under the government-launched Quang Trung Campaign.

The handover ceremony was held in Hoa Thinh commune, with military leaders and local authorities attending. The campaign was initiated by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh on Nov. 30, 2025, aiming to repair damaged homes by the end of December 2025 and complete new housing construction by Jan. 31, 2026.

Lieutenant General Le Ngoc Hai, commander of the 5th Military Region, said repairs to flood-damaged houses had largely been completed after just over a month, calling the campaign a reflection of national unity and solidarity.

Although many soldiers were deployed from outside the area, they treated the construction work as if they were helping their own families, Le Ngoc Hai said, adding that each completed home strengthened the bond between the military and local residents.

At the ceremony, households received gifts and livelihood support from the military and local authorities. Luong Nguyen Minh Triet, Secretary of the Dak Lak Provincial Party Committee, said the housing support provided not only material assistance but also important psychological encouragement for flood victims, helping communities stabilize their lives and resume production.

One beneficiary, Tran Van Khanh, said his family was grateful to receive a new home ahead of the Lunar New Year and pledged to work hard to rebuild their lives.

According to the 5th Military Region, as of Jan. 4, more than 286,000 officers and soldiers and nearly 8,000 vehicles had been mobilized nationwide. Construction has begun on 610 new houses, with 314 severely damaged homes repaired.

In Dak Lak province, 331 houses have been built, and 102 homes have already been handed over. The military plans to complete all handovers in two phases, finishing five days ahead of schedule.

Each newly built house was also equipped with essential household items, including a rice cooker and a wooden bed.

At around 9:30 a.m. on January 2, 2026, a section of the river embankment along the Ba River in Lạc Mỹ village, Sơn Thành commune, Đắk Lắk province suddenly collapsed.

Several local residents had taken refuge under the embankment structure — which had been damaged by previous flooding — to avoid the rain when the concrete portion of the embankment fell down and buried them.

Local officials and emergency responders rushed to the scene. They worked with neighbors to remove the large pieces of fallen concrete, but unfortunately all four people trapped underneath died.

According to the initial report from the People’s Committee of Sơn Thành commune, the victims were:
Mr. Bùi Xuân Vạn (64) and his wife Ms. Lê Thị Thi (64)
Mr. Đỗ Xuân Hữu (62) and his wife Ms. Nguyễn Thị Kim Linh (58)

All four were from Lạc Mỹ village and had been working nearby planting trees. Because it started raining, they went under the concrete embankment structure (a shelter-like space beneath the embankment road) to stay dry when it unexpectedly collapsed on them, trapping them underneath.

Local authorities and residents continued their response efforts after the collapse, attempting to recover the victims and assess the situation.
