Through the Australian Volunteers Program, Dr. Sarah James joined Director Antoine Ravo at the Vanuatu Department of Agriculture & Rural Development. What began as a volunteer assignment grew into a powerful collaboration, shaping national systems, empowering staff, and driving gender-inclusive policy.

From the Department’s first business plan to the Ministry’s Gender Equality Action Plan, their teamwork has left a lasting legacy.

Australian diplomat James Batley met Joel Kaltang in the 1980s. From driving his band to gigs to joining kastom ceremonies, Batley became family. After Joel passed, his son James Kaltang carried the friendship forward.

Anthea Arukole and Georgia Noy’s 23-year friendship began with Youth Challenge Vanuatu, driven by a shared passion for helping others and a belief that change is possible. From volunteers to leaders, their bond grew into a sisterhood built on courage, trust, and solidarity.
