State of the Pacific Conference 2026: A Platform for Pacific Voices and Partnerships

By Francis Vaigalepa

Canberra, AUSTRALIA – 16 April 2026: The State of the Pacific Conference 2026 stands as a significant gathering dedicated to shaping the future of the Pacific region through collaboration, dialogue, and shared knowledge.

The conference coincided with the visit from Samoa of 6 journalists on a Press Club Tour organised by the Pacific Media Assistance Scheme (PACMAS) in partnership with the Journalist Association of (W) Samoa (JAWS) who were able to attend the conference.

The theme of the conference is “Weaving Pacific Research Relationships" and is a flagship event of the Pacific Research Program, the biennial conference brings together a diverse group of participants, including scholars, policymakers, practitioners, business leaders, civil society representatives, and community voices.

Together, they engage with the evolving challenges and emerging opportunities facing the Pacific. This theme highlights the importance of building long-term partnerships grounded in Pacific values. Much like the traditional practice of weaving, meaningful research and effective policy rely on collaboration, trust, and care.

The conference emphasises the co-creation of knowledge that is not only academically rigorous but also deeply connected to the lived realities, aspirations, and cultural foundations of Pacific communities.

A central highlight of the event is the keynote address by Samoa former Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataʻafa. Her selection as keynote speaker reflects her distinguished leadership and enduring commitment to Pacific development with decades of experience in governance and advocacy,

Fiame embodies the integration of traditional knowledge systems with contemporary political leadership. Her work across national, regional, and global platforms positions her as a powerful voice on issues such as climate justice, gender equity, and sustainable development—key themes that align closely with the conference’s objectives.

Over the course of three days, the conference will feature parallel streams exploring a wide range of critical topics including telecommunications, labour mobility, gender equality, governance, climate diplomacy, legal and justice systems, as well as the growing role of Pacific research and data. Each stream is designed to encourage cross-sector dialogue and foster innovative approaches to complex regional issues. Importantly, the conference aims to reflect the interconnected nature of Pacific societies by bringing together diverse perspectives across disciplines, communities, and borders.

This inclusive approach mirrors Fiame’s own leadership style, which bridges local realities with global agendas and ensures that Pacific priorities remain visible on the world stage.
Ultimately, the State of the Pacific Conference 2026 is more than just a forum for discussion; it is a space for building enduring relationships and strengthening collective action.

The conference is set to inspire meaningful dialogue and reinforce its mission of creating a resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking Pacific region.

Hon. Fiame Naomi Mataafa opens State of the Pacific 2026 in Canberra.

The State of the Pacific (SotP) Conference 2026 is now underway at the Australian National University, bringing together Pacific leaders, researchers, policymakers and community representatives for three days of dialogue on the region’s future.

The conference opened on today with a keynote address by former Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataʻafa, who set the tone for discussions focused on collaboration, resilience, and Pacific led approaches to development. The event is hosted by the Department of Pacific Affairs and is a flagship initiative of the Pacific Research Program.

Held under the theme “Weaving Pacific Research Relationships,” this year’s conference emphasises the importance of long term partnerships grounded in Pacific values such as trust, reciprocity and shared knowledge. Organisers say the theme reflects the idea that like weaving, strong regional outcomes depend on careful, collective effort across communities and disciplines.

As a biennial hybrid event, SotP 2026 is being held both in person and online, enabling wider participation from across the Pacific and beyond. The program brings together a broad range of voices, including academics, government officials, business leaders, civil society groups and grassroots community representatives.

Over the three days, participants are engaging in parallel sessions covering key regional issues such as climate change, governance, gender equality, labour mobility, telecommunications and justice systems. A strong focus is also placed on strengthening Pacific research capacity and improving how data is used to support evidence based decision making.

Organisers say the conference is designed not only to share knowledge but also to build lasting relationships that can support more coordinated regional responses to shared challenges. Networking sessions and collaborative workshops are expected to play a key role in shaping future partnerships across the Pacific.

JAWS Opens Registration, Urges Journalists to Sign Up as Accreditation Rules Tighten
24 January 2026

Apia, Samoa - The Journalists Association of Samoa (JAWS) has
officially opened registration for journalists, associates and media organisations, calling on all media practitioners in Samoa to register as part of strengthening professionalism and accountability in the industry.

JAWS confirmed that registration is now available under three membership categories: individual membership at SAT50, associate membership at SAT100, and organisational membership at SAT300. Registered members may also apply for an official JAWS identification card at an additional cost of SAT30.

According to JAWS, membership provides journalists with formal recognition as registered media professionals, access to exclusive media events and briefings, and professional support through the national journalist body.

JAWS has stressed that registration is becoming increasingly important, particularly as new measures are expected to affect court reporting. The association noted that in the near future, only journalists registered with JAWS will be permitted to attend court
proceedings and report on cases. This development makes registration essential for journalists who regularly cover legal and judicial matters.

The association said the move highlights the growing emphasis on verified credentials, ethical reporting and professional standards within the media sector. By registering with JAWS, journalists ensure they are recognised as legitimate practitioners and are able to continue reporting without unnecessary barriers.

JAWS also emphasized that becoming a member strengthens the collective voice of journalists in Samoa, promotes responsible and ethical journalism, and supports the development of a credible and professional media industry that serves the public interest.
Journalists, media workers and organisations seeking further information or wishing to register are encouraged to contact JAWS via email at [email protected].

JAWS has urged all journalists working in Samoa to take the step to register and become part of the officially recognised body representing the country’s media professionals.
