The world of Shpresa, a teenage girl who loves football but whose parents want to see her married, was shared with about 100 young people and their parents at a film screening for 16 Days of Activism.

The screening of the UNMIK-produced short film 'Romni', which captures Shpresa's struggle, was hosted by Voice of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians at Sirius Hotel last week. It coincides with the to End Violence Against Women and Girls campaign and is the first of a series of Kosovo-wide community screenings to raise awareness and generate conversations about the phenomenon of early and forced marriage.

In Kosovo, an estimated 1 in 25 women and 1 in 50 men are married before the age of 18; while in the Roma, Ashkali, and Egyptian communities those numbers are 1 in every 3 women and 1 in every 10 men, according to 2020 research by@unicefkosovoprogramme and e Statistikave të Kosovës

Yesterday, joined to mark the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.
“Meaningful social development simply cannot happen without the voices, leadership, and active involvement of persons with disabilities. We are honored to receive a recognition from HANDIKOS for our partnership in advancing the rights of persons with disabilities in Kosovo", said Jerome Bouyjou, Head of UNMIK’s Human Rights Office & Representative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.
This year’s reminds us that when persons with disabilities can contribute on equal terms, communities become stronger and more sustainable.
UNMIK remains committed to working with HANDIKOS and partners across Kosovo to break down barriers, advance equal rights, and support efforts to align Kosovo’s legal framework with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities — ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

📍Today, UNMIK joins the global community in marking the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, observed under this year’s theme: “Fostering disability-inclusive societies for advancing social progress”.

This theme underscores the urgent need to build societies where persons with disabilities can participate fully, equally, and independently in all aspects of life. It also highlights the importance of inclusive policies, unfettered access to services, and the removal of physical and social barriers.

🗣️Creating an inclusive society not only advances the rights of all, but serves as a foundation for real and sustainable progress,” said the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General and OiC UNMIK Milbert Dongjoon Shin. “When people of all abilities can contribute without limitations, communities thrive.”

👩‍🦽‍➡️In Kosovo, people with disabilities have the potential to drive change. Whether it is advocating for accessible schools, inclusive workplaces, improved emergency-response systems, or expanded essential services, their determination is helping build a more just, equal, and inclusive society.

Their innovation and resilience do more than inspire - they propel progress. Yet, too many still face discrimination, inaccessible environments, and unequal access to services that should be guaranteed to all.

UNMIK reiterates its call for persons with disabilities to be fully included as equal partners in shaping the decisions that affect their lives, as fundamental rights and justice.

The Mission reaffirms its commitment to working alongside organizations led by persons with disabilities, government institutions, and civil society to uphold the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities; to advocate for stronger laws, more inclusive policies, and accessible spaces; and to promote a society where everyone can participate freely, safely, and meaningfully in public life.
