Through Remzije’s memories, two moving encounters with Rexhep Mala and Nuhi Berisha, who were killed by Serbian police in Pristina on January 19, 1984.

“Once, it was springtime, I was hanging clothes, and I didn’t see when Rexhep came, and he went: Paaa! you know, to scare me… And when he went home, he told his father [Mehmet], and I was present, ‘Dad, I scared Remzije.’ He said, ‘No son, Remzije doesn’t get scared. You startled her, you know, you startled her,’ and we all laughed.”

“I said, ‘Nuhi, you can’t imagine the search they did at uncle Mehmet’s...’ And he said, ‘Remzije, don’t worry,’ he said, ‘that even if all of Kosovo burns,’ he said, ‘I will never leave Rexhep alone.’ And indeed, he never did.”

Një nga organizatorët kryesorë të sistemit paralel të arsimit në Kosovë gjatë viteve ‘90, Halim Hyseni luajti një rol thelbësor në hartimin e një skeme që ngriti shkolla në shtëpi private pasi nxënësit dhe mësuesit shqiptarë u përjashtuan nga institucionet publike.

Ai përshkruan:

“Kemi qenë në Podujeve. U mbyllen shkollat. [...] Shkum unë edhe Bajrami m’i vizitu. Atmosfera tepër e randë, shqetësimi shumë i madh. Unë u thashë atyne, shkollat e mesme ishin n’pytje. Thashë, ‘Mos keni dert se mësimi do të vazhdon shqip’. Këtu ka lindë idea. Sepse unë punoja atëherë në zyre në Entin Pedagogjik ku oshtë Shoqata e Veteranëve, qaty i kem pasë zyret. Punoja deri në ora 12:00 të natës. T’u mendu çka me ba, si ma ba? [...] Unë e dija që janë diku rreth 10,000 policë në Kosovë. E dija që numrin e kemi 12,000 paralele. Nuk ka mundësi kurfar’ mënyre ta ndal mësimin kur ti don të arsimohesh. Në qato kushte, në livadh, në livadh; në arë, në arë; në shtëpi, në shtëpi.”

A member of Adem Demaçi’s political generation, Mejreme Shema was a quiet and pragmatic leader her entire life — from the beginning of the underground to the education movement against Milošević and the building of post-socialist independent unions.

In her oral history interview, she describes:

Some of my brother’s friends from Normale came with a flag, they were coming from the city center. One said, ‘Sahit, they’ve imprisoned Femi Pushkolli, they’ve imprisoned this professor, this one, that one, that one too.’ ‘What happened? How?’ ‘That’s what they said, they’ve been imprisoned, we need to go and free them.’ ‘Come on, let’s go.’.. We left the faculty and set off. We got as far as the Grand Hotel here, I mean, the lower part of the square… We stopped there because the army, the police, had made a cordon. If you kept going, you would have gone into fire. “Stop!” We stood, they stood, we stood. They started shooting from tall buildings…They were throwing things from above, even flowerpots and everything, they were also shooting with weapons. As I was there holding the flag, talking to my brother, I just felt a kind of heat right here {the back of her head}, and said, 'Man, something feels hot,' you know? So I wouldn’t fall, I pushed the flagpole down, leaned on it to the ground, it had a k**b, and I held onto it so I wouldn’t fall. Then my brother grabbed me, blood was running down.
