My first visit to the Grand Egyptian Museum and 'only' the stairway galleries were open to the public.

It was already obvious that this place was going to rival any museum in the world.

The museum is fully accessible with multimedia features and a state of the art, double garage sized 'floating room' to access the upper levels.

These were found in precambrian deposits meaning they were deposited there around 3 million years ago!

The Sohag Museum proved to be an unexpected treasure trove of artifacts from the pre-dynastic including mummies from the Royal Tomb uncovered at Abydos.
More evidence that Pyramids weren't constructed as burial tombs?

There are items that belonged to pilgrims undertaking their Haj to Mecca as well as beautifully illustrated Islamic texts including the Qur'an.

It is forbidden under Islamic law to use anamorphic or zoomorphic illustrations which explains the intricately drawn floral and geographic texts.

Sohag is one of Egypt's more conservative cities and I needed permission from the authorities to leave my hotel, even to venture to the shops and cafés less than 20 meters away.

My General Intelligence Service shadow miraculously turned up again on the day I visited the museum. The photo I took of him has been edited for his protection and was taken without him knowing.

The image of the doorway to the underworld is a perfect example of what I believe shows an electronic or mechanical circuit. Its geometric precision doesn't look like any plants I've ever seen!

When I look at the Black granite statue of Nekhtnebf holding naos of Onuris I'm reminded of the Summerian legends of the Annunaki and their genetic engineering of Anatomically Modern Humans 🤔

I was there mid August 2024 and was the only visitor that MONTH and the curators treated me like royalty.

Highly recommended if you have time to do more than the usual tourist sites!

The White Monastery of Abbou Shenouda was built in 442 by Saint Pigol although it is named after and is named after his nephew Saint Shenoute.

As well as an altar dedicated to Arch Angel Michael the Monestary contains a library of rare books including the Apochraphal Gospel, and all the books of Deuteronomy!

Only 10% of the original library remain, the rest are scattered in museums around the world😞

The monastery has seen invasions, fires and vandalism but was restored by the visionary Muhammed Ali Pasha, the founder of modern Egypt.

I was honoured and grateful to be taken into the library and given a tour by one of the monks who also blessed me in the chapel of Arch Angel Michael who is reverred in both Christianity and Islam.

I don't subscribe to any religion but couldn't help but think that the rest of the world could learn a thing or two from Egypt, where Islam, Christianity and Judaism co exist without any hostility ❤️

This is, in my opinion, so wrong. The largest publishing association in South Africa has now limited themselves to three, rigid topics when considering new authors for publication!

All three are basically academic categories.

Obviously educational books are important but if you remove entertainment, enjoyment and anything even slightly, off topic then what is the point in learning to read.

We're not all robots (yet).

The excuse given is the difficult economic situation within publishing in SA at the moment.

Surely that's the time to diversify🤷

Sunrise over the Nile and I was off to Akhmim and the temple of Min.

The ancient Greeks called it Khemmis and Herodotus wrote about Pan, the Greek version of Min and identified this temple as being the birthplace of Perseus, although his story of the hero climbing the great poles are very similar to earlier records of Nubian athletes doing exactly the same!

The town is famous for its textile industry in Greek and Roman times. Traditional textile merchants exist in the town even today.

Some Greek sculptures remain although the site remains its Egyptian heritage and features a well preserved statue of Meritamen, daughter of Ramesses II.

High above the Sohag Governorate in Upper Egypt, El-Hawawish Necropolis served as the cemetery for the ancient city of Akhmim (also known as Panopolis) and features rock-cut tombs dating primarily to the Old Kingdom and First Intermediate Period.

One of the things I was looking for on my journey were similarities between ancient sites all over the world so finding this dolman at the entrance to a tomb belonging to a nobleman was a significant moment for me😁🇪🇬♥️
