Meta laying off thousands of workers
Tech and social media giant Meta is laying off thousands of workers in an effort to push productivity upward.

The Brief
Menlo Park-based Meta is laying off 5% of its workforce on Monday.
The "lowest performers" are being let go.
Workday and Salesforce also announced recent layoffs.
MENLO PARK, Calif. - Tech and social media giant Meta is laying off thousands of workers in an effort to push productivity upward.

What we know:
A Business Insider report said Meta, whose platforms include Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp, is cutting 5% of its workforce.

According to estimates, that would be about 4,000 workers.

Employees are expected to be notified by email on Monday morning.

Despite the layoffs, Meta still has about 1,000 job openings in California.

The backstory:
According to Reuters, Meta executives say they're targeting the company's "lowest performers" and will backfill positions.

The company classifies the cuts that impact countries across the globe as "performance terminations."

While workers in the United States are getting the bad news on Monday, employees in more than a dozen other countries in Europe, Asia and Africa got let-go notices for Feb. 11 to 18.

Meta staffers in Germany, France, Italy and the Netherlands are exempt from the cuts, according to Reuters, "due to local regulations."

The company says it'll expedite the hiring of machine learning engineers and other business-critical roles.

Some industry experts say employees who have pushed back against returning to full-time office work could be targeted by this second round of Meta reductions.

From 2022 to 2023, the company sacked about a quarter of it's workforce, or 21,000 people.

University of New Haven business professor James Mohs said that Meta has been laying people off since 2023, targeting "low performers."

"Those that are not performing up to the standards. Now, there's another blurb that says Mister Zuckerberg has raised standards," where some people are "working from home and not doing much."

Mohs said that costs companies productivity, and many are or will soon move completely away from that option

Rising consumer demand for fewer empty calories is pushing the snack and beverage giant to offer options with less sodium, fat and artificial ingredients.

Amid a national debate on highly processed foods and the rise of weight-loss drugs, the snack and beverage giant PepsiCo is responding by offering healthier versions of some snacks.

Early Tuesday, the company reported that revenue in the fourth quarter slipped modestly to $27.8 billion from $27.9 billion a year earlier, while net income rose to $1.5 billion from $1.3 billion. For the year, revenue climbed slightly to about $91.9 billion from $91.5 billion, while net income rose to about $9.6 billion from $9.1 billion a year earlier.

As some consumers have felt their wallets pinched by inflation, particularly higher prices for food in recent months, Wall Street analysts and investors have been closely watching sales volumes at leading food companies. For the quarter ending Dec. 28, volumes for PepsiCo’s Frito-Lay business in North America, which, at $7.3 billion, accounts for about a quarter of PepsiCo’s total revenues and is home to popular munchies like Doritos and Cheetos, fell 3 percent. Volumes for the Frito-Lay business have fallen for five consecutive quarters.

In early trading, PepsiCo’s share price was down 4 percent at $144.08.

Executives at PepsiCo attributed part of the declining volumes in the category to inflationary pressure felt by some consumers. In response, the company said it planned to offer more snacks at different price points, including smaller counts of its variety boxes.

MARYSVILLE, Ohio — Honda Motor
is launching the next generation of its manufacturing in a historically unusual place for the 75-year-old Japanese automaker: Ohio.

Honda is in the midst of completing more than $1 billion in new investments — upped Wednesday from an initially announced $700 million — in the state this year. Upgrades most notably include installing six “giga presses,” which were made well-known by Tesla
, and a new “cell” manufacturing system for its upcoming electric vehicle battery cases.

The company’s emerging EV hub in Ohio, including a separate $3.5 billion battery plant, will be the flagship for Honda’s global manufacturing operations. That includes its Marysville Auto Plant being capable of producing traditional vehicles, hybrids and EVs on the same assembly line, officials said during a daylong tour of the operations.

“The Honda EV hub in Ohio is establishing the global standard for EV production for people, for technology and for processes,” said Mike Fischer, North American lead for Honda’s battery-electric vehicle projects. “As we expand EV production regionally and globally, this is the footprint and the characteristic performance that will be used.”
