Whisky Advent Calendar Day #24
White Peak · 2 Year Old · Batch 1 · 50%

Last day of the whisky Advent calendar. It's bittersweet, it's sad that it's over but what a ride!

Today we have a 2 year old spirit from England.

Nose; herbal and tropical, notes of coconut and green apple.

Palate; red wine, berries, grassy-mulch.

Finish; short with a light peat influence coming up at the end which is slightly nutty with roasted coffee.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #23
Glenallachie · 10 Year Old · Batch 3 · 49.9%

Glenallachie is a personal favourite of mine so I am super excited for this one! Could ask for a better penultimate whisky!

Nose; Black Forest cake, toasted cereals, dried fruits, meringue and marzipan.

Palate; full, sticky sweet, dry at the back, and packed full of flavour! There's a fresh fruityness to it and that dry end has a warmth of cinnamon.

Finish; long, which I find typical of Glenallachie. This doesn't pack as much of a kick as the standard release of the cask strength 10, but at this lower ABV it allows the flavours to take centre stage and be really accessible.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #22
Strathclyde · 31 Year Old · Batch 4 · 45%

Today we have the oldest age statement of the advent calendar at 31 Years Old!

Nose; characteristic grain whisky nose, sweet and floral, with creamy vanilla bean.

Palate; Comes in sweet and subtle but builds to a massive favour bomb, of tropical fruits.

Finish; on the shorter end of a short-medium finish.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #21
Speyside #3 · 8 Year Old · Batch 1 · 50.7%

Now this is an unspecified Speyside, so we can be sure it comes from Speyside, which really narrows it down... Byeway, the label appears to be a toast to the ghost, where have I heard that before... 🤔

Nose; a surprising amount of Sherry notes from a whisky so light, combined with icing sugar, gummy lollies, and a grassy influence.

Palate; again more sherry notes, there is a surprising weight and thickness to this dram that I don't expect from such a light coloured one. Don't just a dram by its colour folks.

Finish; long, it's a very sweet dram but there is and underlying savouryness that jumps up at the end like a palate cleanser and makes me want to jump straight back in!

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #20
Teaninich · 10 Year Old · Batch 3 · 49.2%

From a distillery I haven't heard of, to a blend Im sure everyone has heard of (Johnny Walker) we have a dram from Teaninich distillery.

Nose; lemon tart, oats, chocolate milk, and some baking spices

Palate; thick and creamy, honey with some more cereals, a fair amount of heated spice at the end (like ginger)

Finish; short to medium. That thick creamy feel carries the spices into a medium finish.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #19
Macduff · 10 Year Old · Batch 10 · 52%

Macduff distillery bottle their whisky under Glen Deveron or The Deveron. They go by Macduff when bottled under Independent Bottlers.

Nose; really enticing, sweet, fruity and nutty with underlying salty (salted caramel) and mineral notes.

Palate; does not hold back on the flavour and I'm just continuously impressed at the approachability of these cask strength (or at least high ABV) bottlings from .

Tasting fruits, more nuttiness, and chocolate (combined to give a sense of Cadbury's Fruit & Nut). But there is also a juiciness to it.

Finish; quite long, that juicy fruit feeling carries all the other flavours well into the finish and after the dram is gone.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #18
Bruichladdich · 14 Year Old · Batch 20 · 50.5%

Huge fan of Bruichladdich (any Islay distillery really, even when they're non-peated).

Nose; this is super Christmassy, strong sherry notes, raisins, caramel sauce, orange peel, and dusty bookshelves.

Palate; fruit cake, dark berries, baking spices, subtle oak and more dusty, musty, leathery books

Finish; longish. This one hangs around for a while, it isn't super thick and syrupy like other sherry cask dram, but there is plenty of substance to give a long finish.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #18
Aberlour · 9 Year Old · Batch 6 · 49.7%

Much lighter than your typical Aberlour! Love to see that natural colour!

Nose; fruity, lemon meringue, herbs, and toasted cereals.

Palate; that herbaceous notes comes across with some oakyness on the palate combined with a full fruity flavour. It's a very substantial dram with a huge flavour.

Finish; long. This one remains for quite a while and has an aftertaste for days. A little different to 'typical' (sherried Aberlour) but if you've had the A'bunadh, you will be familiar with how full an Aberlour can be.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #16
Irish Single Malt #1 · 14 Year Old · Batch 4 · 47.6%

Irish you a Merry Christmas!
Our first Irish whisky of the calendar!

Nose; vanilla icecream, Allen's Frogs Alive, Apricots, and some herbs.

Palate; more red frogs, apricot yoghurt, and zesty citrus

Finish; flavour wise, it's a bit short, but it's such a creamy dram that it feels like it lingers for ages!

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #15
James E. Pepper · 3 Year Old · Pedro Ximénez cask finish · 50%

We are rye-turning to the states with a rye whisky finished in PX casks.

Nose; typical Rye with an added twist, the PX cask gives it a spiced, raisiney and chocolatey essence.

Palate; I don't think I've had a smoother rye! If had at room temperature it almost disappears as soon as you sip it. But then it jumps up and brings forward the flavour; walnuts, fruitcake, and honey.

Finish; medium. For someone who loves a dry dram, this is a stellar rye! Huge fan!

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #14
Speyside #4 · 24 Year Old · Batch 1 · 47.8%

I personally believe/ hope, this label tells part of 's biography; the story of how Dave Worthington was bequeathed a Banjonir from the whisky gods, a level of whisky glory we can all aspire to.

Nose; oak, vanilla, apples and mint

Palate; starburst lollies, juicy sweet red apples,

Finish; short and sweet.

This is a real tasty dram, very much on the juicy fruits/sugar/gummy lolly side of sweet. A well rounded, enjoyable dram.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #13
Japanese Blended Whisky #1 · 21 Year Old · Batch 5 · 47.7%

An age statement Japanese whisky sitting at 21 years! Need I say more! 😍

Nose; subtle yet refined and inviting. Soft cereal notes, red berries, double cream.

Palate; makes a very classy entrance, like the nose it isn't in your face. Sweet fruits, honey and cereal underpinned by an oaky-earthy influence.

Finish; medium. It perfectly mellows out leaving behind a sweetness in the mouth and that oaky-earthy influence in the throat.

Final thoughts; undoubtedly one of the more refined whiskies I've had lately and it's definitely left a strong and memorable impression. However, knowing this bottle goes for $600 here is Aus, I would struggle to balance that price/quality ratio.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #12
Blended Whisky 2 · 22 Year Old · Batch 3 · 41.8%

First proper blend whisky of the advent calendar. At 22 years, this is nothing to turn your nose up at, speaking of:

Nose; raw sugar and sweet caramel, Doritos, and cinnamon.

Palate; quite a depth to it, comes across sweet (much what you expect from the nose) but then it just deepens substantially. Cherries and more grainy sugar.

Finish; quite short but appropriately so. There's an aftertaste that I'm struggling with. It's a bit too sweet for me, but I do enjoy the depth of it.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #11
Islay #4 · 11 Year Old · Batch 2 · 48.8%

11 years for the 11th day, how fitting!

Another unnamed Islay, let's see if I can discern where this one comes from.

Nose; dusty leather-bound books by a smoldering fire, cheese and dried apricots, fig and toffee

Palate; silky caramel ice cream, honey cashews, smokey coals

Finish; long. It's an amazing balance of sweet and smokey. They work together so well and help compliment each other without overpowering one another.

I would have to place my money on this being Lagavulin (or maybe that's just wishful thinking on my part).

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #10
Balblair · 7 Year Old · Batch 1 · 49.9%

First thing that got me about this one was it's colour. It was so clear, almost colourless! But I think this a testament for colour not always equating to depth of flavour because this was packed full of it!

Nose; Pineapple, coconut and other tropical fruits, vanilla and a hint of BBQ.

Palate; sweet with and hit of something akin to mint, there was also a sweet, sticky and smokey hint of BBQ sauce and rosemary.

Finish; short, but works well for the type of whisky it is, flavour punch so having it dissipate relatively quickly I found was a good thing and had me going back for another hit.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #9
Whitlaw · 15 Year Old · Batch 1 · 49.7%

I've searched High land low for Whitlaw distillery with no success, so I'll just Park my curiosity here and accept that it cannot be found.

Nose; wood smoke, nutmeg, and white pepper.

Palate; stone fruit, lightly charred oak, and pepper.

Finish; medium - long. Sticky burnt toffee.

Whisky Advent Calendar Day #8
Islay #1 · 10 Year Old · Batch 3 · 47.9%

Oh boy howdy! Have I been waiting for a peated whisky! And from Islay no less! Now the distillery isn't mentioned, but after the notes I'm going to take a guess.

Nose; smoked salmon, savoury meats, lemon and salt. It also seems quite oily.

Palate; with the noticeable peat on the nose, it isn't the first thing that comes across on the palate surprisingly, it's very creamy and fresh, oily mouth coating, hit of peat that rises from the throat.

Finish; medium. Given the oily feel, this doesn't sit around as long as you would expect, there are remnants of peat and some sweetness of fruit like a white peach.

Now I intially thought this was an Arbedg, I got savoury meats with lemon and lime on the coast, but given the sweet, creamy and almost oily palate I would guess that this is probably from Caol Ila.
