Normally I wind down by scrolling through one of the social media platforms or through Pinterest.

However, tonight I ran across this word search book inside of one of my bins and realized that I haven't completed a puzzle in years.

Then I also thought about it, why educators lose themselves and relinquish their small joys while navigating this industry.

I encourage you this beginning of school season to step away from the tech and to tap into your inner child and creative self.

Being a first-year arts teacher in public school? That part is not for the faint of heart.

Let’s talk about what they don’t tell you:

You’ll walk into a classroom with no mirrors, no floor tape, and no curriculum and still be expected to “engage every student.”

You’ll be seen as the “fun class"...until testing season hits and your room disappears.

You’ll show up with passion… and realize quickly that passion alone won’t protect your peace.

Here’s what I wish someone told me:

📌 Procedures aren’t optional—they’re the choreography that keeps your class from chaos.
📌 Joy and structure are not enemies. You need both.
📌 District PD will be slim. Find your people. Join orgs. Keep growing.
📌 And when it feels like no one sees you? Double down on your why.

Your classroom may not look like the vision board.

But it can still be a place where students are seen, centered, and celebrated.

The start of the new school year is almost here and we know what that tends to bring.

A lot of joy, new beginnings some fun along with a little chaos and plenty of beginning of the year exhaustion

As educators, we tend to go super hard in the beginning of the year to ensure that everything is set up how it needs to set up, however unfortunately that tends to have a negative impact on our bodies and spirits.

Let's do better this year and not burn ourselves out in the first two months of school.
