Does the Course You Study Determine Your Future? (Part 2)
Will you believe that both Chinua Achebe and Chimamanda Adichie were admitted to study Medicine in the university but dropped out of the course to study English and writing instead?
And I won't even mention Bill Gate,Elon Musk, Zuckerberg, Oprah Winfrey, & hundreds others who didn't even bother to finish from the University.
Only the poor and the miseducated think that their children must, should, and have to compulsorily study a so-called lucrative course before they can make it in life. Some of our youths actually wait for five years or more writing JAMB and Post-UTME just to get these so-called professional courses.
Charles Darwin was admitted to study Medicine. Then he failed. His father thought he should become a pastor. He failed at that again. Then he became a wanderer, jumped on a ship to explore the world. It was while exploring that he made his groundbreaking discoveries on evolution. Today, we regard him as one of the greatest people on earth.
Don't get me wrong. I think Medicine, Engineering, Law and the others we all regard as high-class are great. And I believe we need more of them in society. But they are not the determiners of our destiny. You must not feel inferior if you aren't studying them. You have something of value too. The worlr needs artists just as it needs neurosurgeons.
Look within for the gift nature has endowed you with. As the great German Writer, Herman Hesse has written, "when a man tried to realise himself through the gift nature has endowed him, he does the best and only meaningful thing he can do".
We all need to open our eyes. All courses are relevant. If you study philosophy or psychology, apply your critical thinking skills and logic to provide a solution to broken home and despairing lives.
You must seek the seed of utility in every facet of the course. There's no profession in which a person cannot become a hero in it. One of the reasons our country is down
