Gainesville city commissioners are moving forward with an ordinance restricting businesses with 15 or more employees from passing over job applicants with a criminal history.

Employers covered by the rule will not be allowed to perform criminal background checks on applicants other than for domestic violence cases.

The businesses will also generally be restricted from refusing a job to someone based on their criminal history.

Thank your Commissioner by voting them out.

We have gotten requests from folks to post the video of the meeting where the West End Golf Course zoning change request was discussed. The Count Commission voted 4-1 to deny the request and stand by the County's Comprehensive Plan

OK we missed National Black Dog Day (October 1st), but MIDNIGHT doesn't care! 😁
Midnight is about 7 years old, and is the perfect balance of CHILL and PLAYFUL! He loves to explore the yard, roll in the grass, and play with toys. He's currently in a foster home and doing excellent with the resident animals: CATS AND DOGS! He's done well in a crate, too!
If you know anyone looking for an older dog that does play some but loves to cuddle and is good with dogs/cats/older kids please have them look at Midnight!

WELCOME ABOARD JAMIE BASS! Alachua County is pleased to announce the hiring of Jamie Bass as the Alachua County Cuscowilla Manager. She comes to Alachua County from Goochland, VA, where she served as the Program Director for Westview on the James. Previously, she served as the Camp Director for the Girls Scouts of Gateway Council in Jacksonville.
Bass will manage the Cuscowilla Nature & Retreat Center, the County’s summer day camp and overnight retreat facility. She is responsible for developing new and innovative programming; marketing facilities to outside groups to promote rentals and usage; working collaboratively with internal and external partners; serving in an advisory role for the “Friends of Cuscowilla”; and achieving accreditation for summer day camp during 2023.
“Jamie is a seasoned camp professional,” stated Parks and Open Space Director Jason Maurer. “In her few weeks on the job, she has started developing fun and engaging outdoor nature-based educational programming that helps campers develop a love and respect for the great outdoors. She has also started the preliminary steps for accreditation. We are thrilled that she will lead Cuscowilla Nature & Retreat Center.”

Last night the County Commission upheld the Alachua County Comprehensive Plan by denying the zoning change at West End Golf Course. The developer requested changing the zoning from recreational to residential.

Alachua County Emergency Management is proud and humbled to be able to provide support to our Emergency Management colleagues in SW Florida as a result of the destruction brought on by Hurricane Ian.
Emergency Management Director Grice has spent the last week in Cape Coral assisting with recovery efforts and Asst Director Peaton will be leaving today (Monday) to continue the assistance.
We are lucky to have such a supportive group of professionals all over the State, and it brings us comfort to know we can count on assistance for Alachua County if the need ever arises.

The Alachua County Commission recently hosted an Agritourism Conference for County residents and businesses interested in learning more about agritourism.
Agritourism crosses Florida’s two largest industries, tourism and agriculture, to provide on-farm recreational experiences for consumers. In 2021, visitors staying in paid accommodations generated over $630 million in economic impact to Alachua County. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Ag Census, in 2017, Alachua County sold $99 million in agricultural products.
Alachua County Commissioner Anna Prizzia stated, “Agritourism is a growing area of opportunity for our local businesses, and we look forward to this conference as a day to share resources and ideas to further support our agricultural and tourism economies.”

Today, Alachua County is celebrating Indigenous People’s Day. President Joe Biden wrote this in his Indigenous People’s Day declaration:
“On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the sovereignty, resilience, and immense contributions that Native Americans have made to the world; and we recommit to upholding our solemn trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations, strengthening our Nation-to-Nation ties.
For centuries, Indigenous Peoples were forcibly removed from ancestral lands, displaced, assimilated, and banned from worshiping or performing many sacred ceremonies. Yet today, they remain some of our greatest environmental stewards. They maintain strong religious beliefs that still feed the soul of our Nation. And they have chosen to serve in the United States Armed Forces at a higher rate than any other group. Native peoples challenge us to confront our past and do better, and their contributions to scholarship, law, the arts, public service, and more continue to guide us forward.”

Alachua County Community Support Services, in collaboration with faith-based community organizations, invites the community to attend “Honoring the Departed” on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Cemetery (401 S.E. 21st Avenue, Gainesville). “Honoring the Departed” is a ceremony to memorialize indigent individuals that were unclaimed, abandoned, or unknown. The ceremony is free and open to the public.
The memorial is a means to honor those buried with no service. It will consist of inspirational readings and songs to honor those who left us in 2021. The memorial service will conclude with reading the names and a closing song and poem offering hope and remembrance.
“Alachua County cares deeply for all of its citizens and is pleased to work with many of our faith-based organizations to honor the indigent we lost in 2021,” said Alachua County Community Stabilization Program Manager Satori Days.
