John J. Loud graduated from Harvard in 1866 and practiced law.

In his spare time, he took an interest in inventing. In his quest to create something that could write on leather, he invented the first ballpoint pen and patented it on October 30th, 1888.

The pen wasn't useful for letter writing and was not a commercial success. The patent expired in 1905.

Charles II, also known as Charles the Bad, became the King of Navarre in October 1349, days before he turned 17.

When he was 19, he married his cousin, 9-year-old Joan of France. She was the daughter of King John II of France and remained in France until she turned 17.

When they finally got together, they had seven children before Joan's death at 30.

33-year-old Eugene Bulter moved to North Dakota in 1882 and bought a 480-acre farm.

He was considered a recluse and would only go out into town occasionally for business purposes.

In his 50s, Butler started to lose his mind. He claimed people were chasing him, and he would ride horses late at night while screaming and acting crazy.

He was sent to a mental hospital in 1906 and died there seven years later.

A relative inherited his farm, and in 1915, they sent workers to start renovations on the property.

Under the house, one worker found human skeletons.
Authorities thought it might have been a family, but later it was determined to be six male victims.

They were believed to be farmhands that Butler hired to help him.

None of the victims was identified. Since the bones were stolen from the police station after the crime, authorities cannot use modern techniques to close the case.

Lizzie Halliday was born in Ireland in 1859, but her family moved to the USA when she was young.

As an adult, she lived in New York. She was a troublemaker and spent time in prisons and asylums.

Her first two husbands died after short marriages, and she tried to kill her third husband with arsenic. Later, she burned down her shop to collect insurance.

Her crimes escalated in 1891 when she burned down a home and killed her husband's mentally disabled son. When her husband Paul went missing, she was the prime suspect, and while searching, authorities not only found Paul but also found two women who had been shot.

In 1894, she was convicted of murder and became the first woman sentenced to die in the electric chair. Her sentence was commuted to life in a mental institution. She killed a nurse in 1906.

She died in 1918.
