Lawyers for the four Massachusetts State Police instructors charged in Enrique Delgado-Garcia’s death are seeking text messages involving State Police Colonel Geoffrey Noble. The defense believes those communications could reveal how department leadership discussed the case, the investigation and decisions made after Delgado-Garcia’s death.
The request appears to be part of a broader defense effort to examine whether the investigation was handled fairly and independently—and whether the messages contain information that could help the accused troopers. No new charges or major ruling were announced; the main development is the ongoing fight over evidence and discovery.
Lt. Jennifer Penton and Troopers Edwin Rodriguez, David Montanez and Casey LaMonte have pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter and causing serious bodily injury. Penton also faces a separate perjury charge. Prosecutors allege Delgado-Garcia suffered concussion-like symptoms during unauthorized sparring on September 11, 2024, and was allowed to box again the following morning, when he suffered fatal brain injuries.
Bottom line: The defense is now looking beyond what happened inside the gym and examining what senior State Police officials said privately about the case. Those texts could become important if they contradict public statements, reveal investigative pressure or contain information favorable to the defendants.
