Landslide Near Ban Toll Plaza Injures Police Officer, Disrupts Traffic on Jammu-Srinagar Highway

Jammu : A landslide triggered by heavy monsoon rains near the Ban Toll Plaza tunnel in Nagrota disrupted traffic and left a police officer injured on the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway on Monday.

Incident Highlights:

Injured Officer: A probationary Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), traveling to his posting in Samba, was injured when debris from the landslide struck his private vehicle. He was quickly rescued and taken to the hospital, where his condition is reported as stable. His car, however, was heavily damaged.

Traffic Disruption: The landslide blocked a key stretch of the highway, causing a major traffic jam and delaying travel for several hours. Road clearance operations are underway.

Monsoon Impact: The incident is the latest in a series of rain-induced landslides affecting the region. Authorities have linked the landslide to ongoing intense monsoon activity that has increased the risk of slope failures along hilly sections of the highway.

Wider Impact & Warnings:

Just a day earlier, a boulder slide near Dewal Bridge blocked the upper tube of the highway.

Other states like Himachal Pradesh are also facing similar challenges, with NH-5 blocked and Kinnaur district cut off due to landslides.

Authorities are urging motorists to avoid travel on vulnerable routes during heavy rainfall, especially on the Jammu-Srinagar NH, which continues to face high landslide risk due to unstable terrain.

Tragedy in Poonch: School Building Collapse Kills One Child, Injures Several

Jammu : A heartbreaking incident occurred in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district where a school building partially collapsed, leading to the death of a young student and injuring several others.

Incident Overview

The mishap took place during school hours, when a section of the school structure suddenly gave way. One child tragically lost their life on the spot, while several others were seriously injured and rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. Rescue teams responded swiftly, and authorities have begun a formal investigation into the cause of the collapse.

Safety Concerns and Infrastructure Issues
This tragedy has once again highlighted the fragile state of educational infrastructure in remote regions of Jammu and Kashmir. In recent months, several schools in the Poonch district have suffered damage due to harsh weather, including strong winds and storms. In May 2025, multiple school buildings had their roofs blown off in the Mandi zone. Additionally, some schools damaged by landslides remain unrepaired for over two years, forcing students to study in unsafe conditions.

Public Outcry and Government Response
Local residents, parents, and education activists have voiced serious concerns about the condition of school buildings in the region. Many are demanding immediate safety audits and structural repairs to prevent such tragedies in the future. The administration has assured that the injured students will receive the best medical care and that accountability will be fixed.

Key Points Summary:

Location: Poonch district, Jammu & Kashmir

Casualty: One student dead, several injured

Cause: Partial collapse of school building

Response: Rescue operations and medical aid provided immediately

Public Reaction: Demands for safety audits and urgent repairs

Government Action: Investigation launched, compensation likely

This incident has sent shockwaves through the region, underscoring the urgent need to strengthen and modernize infrastructure in vulnerable areas, especially in institutions responsible for children's safety.

Landslide Disrupts New Route to Vaishno Devi Shrine After Heavy Rainfall in J&K

Jammu : A landslide triggered by continuous heavy rainfall blocked the new Himkoti battery car track leading to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Katra, Reasi district of Jammu & Kashmir. The incident occurred near the Satya View Point, but fortunately, no casualties were reported as no pilgrims were present at the time.

Due to the debris blocking around a 30-foot stretch of the track, the Shrine Board suspended battery car services on this route as a precautionary measure. Pilgrims are now being directed to use the traditional track to continue their yatra to the sacred cave temple.

Restoration work is underway, with Shrine Board and district administration teams clearing the affected area. Officials have assured that all safety measures are being followed and that the pilgrimage continues smoothly via the old route.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has predicted more rain in the region, raising the risk of further landslides. Pilgrims have been advised to stay updated with official announcements and plan their journey accordingly.

Omar Abdullah Demands Immediate Statehood for J&K, Rejects Hybrid Governance Model

Srinagar : Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has strongly reiterated the demand for immediate restoration of full statehood to the Union Territory, calling it a constitutional and democratic right of the people.

In a firm statement, Abdullah dismissed any proposal for a “hybrid governance model”, where key powers such as law and order would remain under the Centre’s control. “Such an arrangement is neither acceptable nor practical. There is no precedent for this kind of system anywhere else in the country,” he said.

He reminded the Centre of its commitments made in Parliament and during Supreme Court proceedings, emphasizing that statehood was not a privilege but a promise yet to be fulfilled. The National Conference leader also hinted at taking the legal route if the demand is ignored.

“If needed, we are prepared to knock on the doors of the judiciary,” Abdullah stated, adding that the people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve a fully empowered elected government with control over all affairs, including security.

This comes amid growing political pressure on the Centre to restore the region’s status, which was downgraded to a Union Territory in August 2019 following the abrogation of Article 370.
