KUCHISAKE ONNA GHOST OF JAPANESE WOMAN WITH SURVED MOUTH.

told in ancient times when Japan was still ruled by Samurai, there lived a samurai who had a very beautiful wife who made anyone who saw her stunned by her beauty. This is also what made the samurai fall in love and finally be able to have it. However, behind her beautiful face, it turns out that this woman likes to have an affair with another man behind her husband's back. There have been countless men who have been cheated on by this woman, until one day her husband caught her having an affair which made her furious.

Eyes dark with jealousy, her husband attacked her until he fainted and tied him up. When she regained consciousness, he was threatened with death for wanting to leave him. Later, her husband ripped open her mouth leaving him with a permanent wide "grin". "Who would think you're beautiful now?" said her husband shortly before he beheaded her. A moment later, his husband deeply regretted killing Kuchisake, his wife. Finally, he stabbed himself to death.

This story is believed to be the origin of the appearance of the ghost of Kuchisake Onna, a female ghost with a torn mouth who terrorizes Japan and avenges her death.

The name Kuchisake Onna is taken from Japanese and means 口 (kuchi) which means mouth, 裂け (sake) torn and 女 (onna) which means woman. When translated it means a woman with a torn mouth.

In the urban legend version, Kuchisake-onna is a woman who was a victim of botched facial surgery. It is said that the doctor who operated on her face used pomade (a type of hair oil) with a pungent odor. When he was being operated on he couldn't calm down because of the smell so the doctor accidentally cut his mouth to tear. The woman became hysterical and angry and killed the doctor. Later he was killed by the townspeople and became a curious ghost.

There are several other versions regarding its origin but are less popular, for example:

~ Victim of a traffic accident whose face is disfigured.

~ A woman who has a psychiatric disorder so that she tore her mouth with a sharp object.

~ A woman who is a victim of r**e whose mouth was torn open by her ra**st or she herself did it after going mad from the r**e.

~ A woman whose ancestors earned illicit money by worshiping a dog demon so that her children and grandchildren were cursed to have a torn mouth and when they died they would become demons.

Kuchisake-onna covers her torn mouth with surgical gauze and often roams the city at night, especially when it's foggy. When meeting someone (especially children or students) on a quiet street, he would ask, "Am I pretty?" (Wata shi ki rei?). If the answer is "yes", he will open his mask and ask again, "Even if it's like this?" (Sore demo?) At that time, if the victim answered no, he would be killed with scissors, machetes, sickles or other sharp weapons. If the victim still says yes, the Kuchisake-onna will be happy and set him free, but some say that even if the victim does that, the Kuchisake-onna will follow the victim home and kill the victim at the victim's doorstep. If the victim is a woman, the Kuchisake-onna will rip open the mouth of the victim so that she is similar to him. If the victims are children, he will eat them.

A popular urban legend in the 1970s said that the victim would survive if he answered "normal". While the version in the 2000s said that the victim would survive if he answered "not bad" so the Kuchisake-onna was confused and thought about what she was going to do first, when she was confused the victim had a chance to escape. Another version states that the victim can ask the Kuchisake-onna in return 'am I pretty too' so that the Kuchisake-onna will get confused and then leave.

Another way to get away from the Kuchisake-onna is to offer her a dark yellow hard candy because she loves it but can't enjoy it so it reminds her of her agony again. Apart from that, you can also say "pomade" three times, some say six times. Those words would frighten him and run away as they reminded him of the surgeon who disfigured his face. The victim can also use pomade to prevent him from following her.

It is also said that when in the female and male dormitories, they are not allowed to go to the toilet late at night. Kuchisake Onna is said to often trap students in the toilet to avenge his past. Similar to the legend of Hanako-san, Kuchisake Onna also came out with an exclamation of 10 times in front of the closed toilet door. Strange incidents that occurred in the dormitory's toilet at night caused students to be advised to go to the toilet together.

Kuchisake-onna is said to kill bullies. The reason is that he was bullied when he was young before he died. He would slice the bully's neck without mercy.

The story of the appearance of the Kuchisake Onna is very famous in Japan. It is stated in several literatures that the terror of Kuchisake-onna, a female ghost with a torn mouth, has occurred since the Edo period in the 17th century. During the Edo period, however, sightings of the Kuchisake-onna were associated with the actions of kitsune or fox demons from more ancient Japanese legends. In the past, it was believed that kitsune liked to tease young men. Slowly the legend of the ghost of the torn-mouthed woman just became a story.

But in the 1970s, there was an uproar in Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan about Kuchisake-onna. Rumors spread that the children saw the figure of Kuchisake-onna. There are even reports of schools allowing children to go home only in groups accompanied by teachers for security reasons.

Police at the time were concerned that a killer was on the loose looking for targets, so they mobilized night patrols and issued local alerts. Late 1979, the "Watashi Kirei?" terror of Kuchisake-onna subsided.

So if you visit Japan one day, and walk out at night and meet a strange woman with her mouth covered, then be careful because it could be a Kuchisake Onna ready to kill you!........
