In a world where powerful families were measured by titles, armies, and political influence, Pauline Bonaparte discovered something that even wealth could not protect her from: loss.

In 1802, she was only 21 years old when the man she had married, French general Charles Leclerc, died from yellow fever during Napoleon Bonaparte’s failed attempt to restore French control over Saint-Domingue.

She had arrived in the Caribbean as the wife of a powerful military commander, surrounded by expectations of prestige and privilege.

She left as a widow.

The island that had promised glory had instead given her grief, war, and the painful reality that even those closest to power could not escape tragedy.

When Pauline returned to Europe, she came back to a very different life.

Her brother Napoleon was rising toward the height of his power. France was moving toward empire, and the Bonaparte family stood at the center of European politics.

After her first husband’s death, Pauline married Prince Camillo Borghese in 1803, joining one of Italy’s most influential aristocratic families.

At eighteen, she left Minnesota to weld destroyers; at one hundred, she left generations of girls believing no dream was beyond them.

Jeanne Gibson died on July 29, 2026, after a life that carried her from a Minnesota high school to a Seattle shipyard, an Army transportation center, university classrooms, public schools, airplane cockpits, and gatherings where young people listened to a real Rosie describe what women had built.

She became known as one of the women represented by the name Rosie the Riveter, but no poster could contain the full measure of her life. Jeanne did not remain frozen in the image of a young wartime worker. She kept learning, teaching, flying, remembering, and showing other women that one chapter did not have to define the limits of the next.

Her wartime journey began while she was still a student in Minneapolis. Jeanne later recalled listening to the New York Philharmonic on the radio when news arrived that Pearl Harbor had been attacked. The United States entered World War II, and she wanted to contribute.

She first joined the United States Cadet Nurse Corps. Nursing proved unsuitable for her, but she did not allow one wrong direction to end her effort. In the summer of 1944, at eighteen, she boarded a Greyhound bus and traveled west to Seattle in search of defense work.

Todd Pacific Shipyards hired her as a welder.

The shipyard was far removed from the life she had known in Minnesota. Jeanne worked the swing shift six days a week, helping construct destroyers that would serve in the war. She joined millions of American women whose labor entered factories, shipyards, offices, transportation centers, and military support operations while men were serving overseas.

The familiar Rosie image often makes that labor appear effortless. Jeanne remembered the cold of the Seattle waterfront. She and another worker used their first paychecks to buy wool underwear, and she wore warm layers beneath the heavy clothing required for welding.

The work demanded patience and control. Jeanne compared welding to sewing because both required careful movement and the joining of separate pieces. A welder had to strike an arc, manage molten metal, and guide it steadily along a seam.

During one shift, she welded a ship’s hawsepipe, the strong tube through which an anchor chain passed. It was an ordinary assignment within a vast war effort, yet it captured what women like Jeanne were doing. Their hands were helping hold together the ships on which other lives and missions depended.

The work changed Jeanne’s understanding of herself.

She had crossed the country alone, learned a technical trade, endured long shifts, and performed work that many Americans had once considered unsuitable for women. The experience gave her confidence that remained long after she removed her welding gear.

“Being a Rosie gave me wings to say ‘no’ and do things,” she later explained.

After working in Seattle, Jeanne traveled north to Juneau, Alaska. She joined the Army Transportation Corps at an embarkation center, where she prepared manifests and hatch lists for ships carrying supplies toward the Pacific theater.

At Todd Pacific Shipyards, she had helped build vessels. In Juneau, she helped organize what those vessels carried. Both jobs required accuracy, responsibility, and the willingness to learn work that had rarely been presented to young women as part of their future.

When the war ended, women who had been encouraged to enter industrial and technical jobs faced a different message. Many employers expected them to surrender those positions or accept fewer opportunities as returning servicemen reentered civilian life.

Jeanne moved to San Francisco in 1946 and soon encountered the limits being rebuilt around women. At one workplace, she discovered that a male file clerk earned five dollars more than she did because he was a man.

She resigned.

At another job, a manager told her that her advancement would eventually stop because she would marry and have children. He spoke as though her future had already been decided.

Jeanne had spent the war learning that she could perform difficult work. She was not prepared to accept a smaller life merely because someone else expected one for her.

She moved to Berkeley and entered higher education. At the University of California, Berkeley, she earned an undergraduate degree, a master’s degree, and a doctorate in educational psychology.

The path from shipyard welder to doctoral graduate was not a rejection of her wartime experience. It grew from the confidence that experience had given her. Each new classroom became another place where she could refuse an imposed limit and master something unfamiliar.

Jeanne devoted about thirty years to teaching in Berkeley public schools. She also contributed to the development of science curricula with the American Association for the Advancement of Science during a period when American schools were placing greater attention on scientific education.

Her influence could no longer be measured only in steel seams or shipping records. It appeared in students who learned from her, classrooms shaped by her work, and young people encouraged to imagine futures beyond the choices others had prepared for them.

Jeanne continued challenging herself outside the classroom. In her forties, she attended ground school at Albany High School and completed flight training in Napa.

She earned a private pilot license and joined the Ninety Nines, an international organization of women pilots associated with pioneers such as Amelia Earhart.

The young woman who had once crossed the country by bus could now take the controls of an airplane. The wings she said Rosie had given her had become real.

As the decades passed, Jeanne made another important choice. She refused to allow the women’s wartime labor to disappear into a symbol without names, voices, or individual stories.

She volunteered at Rosie the Riveter World War II Home Front National Historical Park in Richmond, California. During Rosie Fridays, visitors could sit with women who had performed home front work and hear history from those who had lived it.

Jeanne spoke about welding, discrimination, education, and the confidence she carried from the shipyard. She did not present herself as the experience of every wartime woman. The millions of women who worked during the war came from different racial, cultural, economic, and regional backgrounds, and they did not receive equal treatment or opportunity.

Her individual story gave visitors one clear way to understand that larger history. Behind the famous red scarf was a worker who wore wool layers against the waterfront cold, guided molten metal along steel, and understood that precision mattered.

Jeanne also traveled to Hawaii for commemorative events organized with Pacific Historic Parks. She met visitors and spoke with students, including girls still deciding what they wanted to study, create, or become.

She encouraged them to pursue their dreams and reminded them that they were capable of more than the limits other people might place before them. Her message carried authority because it came from a life filled with new beginnings.

In April 2024, Jeanne joined other surviving Rosies in Washington, D.C., as the Rosie the Riveters of World War II received the Congressional Gold Medal. Eight decades had passed since women entered the shipyards and factories in extraordinary numbers.

Jeanne arrived with a copy of her wartime identification badge attached to her clothing. The small image connected the woman in her late nineties to the eighteen year old worker who had traveled west and learned to weld.

Recognition continued during the final weeks of her life. On July 17, 2026, a Wall of Honor banner bearing her name, portrait, occupation, and wartime service was unveiled near the Rosie the Riveter park in Richmond.

Twelve days later, Jeanne Gibson died at one hundred.

The closeness of those dates gives the banner added meaning, but it did not create her legacy. Jeanne had already spent decades building it through her work, her students, her flights, her public service, and every conversation in which she helped another person understand what women had contributed.

The banner now stands near the place where visitors learn the history she worked to preserve. It tells them that Rosie the Riveter was not merely a poster or a wartime slogan. She was Jeanne Gibson, once eighteen years old, far from Minnesota, wearing heavy gear as she guided an arc of molten metal along a destroyer’s steel.

The steel had to hold.

So did the memory.

Even as genetic science sampled the world unevenly, her research showed Africa holds more human variation than any other continent.

By working with African communities, one geneticist helped reveal that humanity’s deepest genetic story had always been written across Africa.

For Sarah Tishkoff, DNA was never just a collection of letters inside a laboratory computer. It was a record of journeys, adaptations, migrations, and survival carried through generations of people whose histories had too often been overlooked by modern science.

As a human geneticist, she recognized a major weakness in the way scientists studied humanity. Many early genetic studies included large numbers of people with European ancestry, while many African populations remained poorly represented. Tishkoff believed that understanding humanity required going directly to the source of our shared history. What could make a tiny frozen moon spray material into space, and how did one scientist’s camera team uncover the answer?

Before Enceladus became one of the most exciting places in the solar system, it was a small, distant moon that few people outside planetary science paid much attention to. Covered in bright ice and orbiting far from Earth, it appeared to be a quiet frozen world among Saturn’s many moons.

Carolyn Porco saw something different.

She had spent her career learning how to read the surfaces of planets and moons through images. To her, photographs from spacecraft were not simply pictures. They were evidence, records of worlds changing over time, waiting for someone with the right knowledge to understand what they revealed.

Born in New York City in 1953, Porco developed an early fascination with astronomy and the mysteries of the universe. She studied physics and astronomy before earning her doctorate in planetary science from the California Institute of Technology, where she began building the expertise that would eventually place her at the center of one of NASA’s greatest discoveries.

When Congress ended NASA’s SETI program, she helped rebuild the search privately instead of allowing one political decision to silence humanity’s search for other worlds.

For decades afterward, she kept listening to the radio sky without a confirmed answer, carrying forward one of science’s deepest questions: are we alone in the universe?

Long before she became one of the world’s most recognized voices in the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, Jill Tarter was a young scientist drawn toward questions that reached far beyond Earth. She was not searching for a fantasy or chasing a story from science fiction. She was trying to determine whether the universe had produced other civilizations capable of communicating across the vast distances between stars.

Born in 1944 in New York City, Tarter developed an early fascination with understanding how things worked. Her curiosity led her toward engineering and physics, fields where women were still greatly underrepresented during the years when she was building her scientific foundation.

She studied engineering physics at Cornell University and later earned a doctorate in astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley. Those years gave her the technical knowledge needed to approach one of humanity’s biggest mysteries with the discipline of a scientist.

The question behind SETI was simple but enormous: if intelligent life existed somewhere beyond Earth, could humanity detect evidence of it?
