READ: From being a 5th income class town for several decades, Kauswagan has now been reclassified as 1st Class Municipality and now the richest town in the whole province of Lanao del Norte and the highest contributor of real property taxes in the province.
Remitting only approximately 600,000 pesos (USD 10,500) in taxes in 2010, Kauswagan now pays more than 400 million pesos (USD 7 million) in taxes to the province of Lanao del Norte.
In his keynote speech in in Berlin, Mayor Rommel Arnado inspired world leaders and influencers in food and agriculture on how Kauswagan transformed from being a war-torn town into a rich and progressive municipality.
This transformation emanated from a commitment to serve Kauswaganons through the and program which became the Municipality of Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte’s blueprint for success.
“Back in 2012, we needed to align our efforts into food sufficiency, peace and social equity. The main cause of conflict was not ideology nor religion— it was hunger, poverty and failure in the delivery of government services. We invested so much efforts in dismantling the culture of violence and instead sustaining a culture of peace,” stated Mayor Arnado.
“Through this, we brought down poverty incidence in Kauswagan from 80% to 9%. And that’s how we achieved peace and progress,” he added.
