LETHAL Tour stops in Baltimore at Nevermore Hall and Silver Spring at The Fillmore were enigmatic. At the midpoint of her national tour, it was a homecoming for the DMV’s Nasty Mob. Photographer Cristian Espinoza was in the pit for a packed show at Nevermore Hall. NUNAR Editorial Director and official Nasty Mob editor Jeremy Collins was on assignment at the Silver Spring show. Earlier this month, the fifth anniversary of Good Neighbor’s Design Camp rounded off in an evening conversation with artists and , sat with Baltimore Beat Arts Editor , weaving through their artistic practice—from Baltimore roots to New York scenes, and onto imminent openings: Gibbs’ ‘No Solace In The Shade’ at The Brandywine, and a new self-titled monograph for Adams.

This keynote talk, followed by a Q+A, was part of a broader week of deep discussion and gatherings of Baltimore’s design community that included studio tours and the launch of the Open Hands photo book by Good Neighbor owner Shawn Chopra and Baltimore-based director Alonzo Hellerbach.

For the Act Up: Unruled Issue, Baltimore’s own John Wells () stands firmly in the vulnerable, radical tradition of rap.

With his prior two EPs, ‘Can we link before the world ends?’ and ‘Life is hard, can we do it together?”, he confronts love, loss, and the weight of the world—unfiltered and unafraid. From the personal toll of the opioid crisis to war, Wells’ lyrics cut deep, blending hauntingly beautiful production with truth-telling that demands to be heard.

In a period where music artists like Bob Vylan and Kehlani have taken hits to their careers for being outspoken, many artists and their teams continue to rationalize remaining silent on issues that appeal to our basic humanity. To the contrary, Wells expressed the importance of having moral clarity in his work and using his voice.

“I feel the need to speak up, but like I said, it’s not like me doing it is necessarily saving people, but it’s contributing to the overall awareness of letting people know what’s going on..  making people aware, [I] feel like it’s necessary because then hopefully something could change… it’s just my reality to say what is on my mind. To be intentional about what I have to say, it matters.”

Last month, NUNAR’s Act Up: Unruled Issue kicked off with a print exhibition and a champagne toast to five years of the magazine.

Hosted at Chela Mitchell Gallery in Union Market, which recently opened Shy Glizzy’s curatorial debut, the evening gathered guests for a night in D.C.’s go-to locale for creatives.

The night kicked off around 4:00 pm, with it-boy yenga on the turntable. Cover stars Malik DOPE and Anna Divinagracia were in attendance, as well as featured artists Father Sokka and Daryle Locko, while LA-based cover star Verde Madera sent energy from across the coast.

The event culminated in a toast honoring five years of coverage of the creative scene led by Editor-in-Chief Damon J. Barnes, followed by remarks from Jeremy Collins, James Arnold, and the cover stars Anna and Malik. Right after, attendees were treated to a world-class, audio-immersive drum performance by Malik DOPE.

"The name came first as a joke – a high school nickname borrowed from Avatar and crowned with "Father" by internet fate. But the artist behind it is dead serious. Father Sokka () , the non-binary Ethiopian-Eritrean rapper stitching together a D.C. upbringing, Baltimore’s grit, and a diaspora’s defiance, makes music that hits like a right hook: calculated, cathartic, and impossible to ignore. Fresh off a housewarming for their new residence in Baltimore, we talked to Sokka about their return to music, plenty of personal lore, and their read on the DMV’s underground rap scene."
