A VERY DIFFERENT CAR SHOW IS COMING TO HENNESSEY!
Get ready for some rolling, bouncing, and full-on car dancing, the first annual Hennessey Hood & Hydraulics Car Show is hitting town on Saturday, September 13th!

For the uninitiated, a hood and hydraulics show is part car show, part performance. “Hood” means engines on display, gleaming chrome, wild paint jobs, and enough custom detailing to make any gearhead swoon. “Hydraulics” means cars that can hop, drop, tilt, and bounce in time with the music. Think lowrider ballet, but louder.

This high-energy, colorful event comes with serious bragging rights and $3,000 in prize money from Big Dog Kustoms. Competitions include Street, Super Street, and Radical classes, plus Top 10 Sweepstakes and Best of Show cash prizes.

Fuel up with food vendors, enjoy live music from El Junior & Delta Sierra, and check out the Hopper Show at 8:00 pm. Gates open at 6:00 pm, the show kicks off at 6:30, and the band cranks it up at 9:30. Beer garden available for the 21+ crowd.

Location: 1100 N. Mitchell Rd., Hennessey (just north of 4Ts Market)

Fundraiser to Honor Hayden Jay Ryel with Scholarship at Two-Day Truck Show

A special two-day event is set to roll into Enid this weekend in memory of Hayden Jay Ryel. The HJR Showdown, a car and truck show, will be held Friday and Saturday, August 8–9, at the Chisholm Trail Expo Center, 111 W Purdue, Enid. The show will run from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. both days, bringing together the truck community, family, and friends to celebrate Hayden’s life and raise funds for a scholarship in his name.

Hayden, a 2022 graduate of Hennessey High School, worked at Thurmond and proudly served as a volunteer firefighter in Dover. Known for his big heart and passion for helping others, Hayden was also an avid outdoorsman who loved goose hunting, mud bogging with family, and bringing joy to those around him.

A familiar face at truck shows and on TikTok, Hayden was determined to make a name for himself by customizing his pickup and sharing his journey online. His goal of becoming “TikTok famous” was just one example of his determined spirit and love for life.

Hayden passed away on October 16, 2024, in Marshall, Illinois, at the age of 20. Born in Enid on July 1, 2004, his memory continues to inspire those who knew him.

The HJR Showdown is being organized by Shyla Miller, Hayden’s girlfriend, with support from family, friends, and the broader truck enthusiast community. Proceeds from the event will go toward establishing a scholarship in Hayden’s honor, ensuring that his legacy of kindness, hard work, and community service lives on.

WEBCAST WEDNESDAY: CHRIS LEE
Jack Quirk sits down and visits with his longtime friend Chris Lee, KOCO Channel 5's lead storm chaser, a legend in Television News storm coverage. This was more than just a fun day of catching up; it was a look back at the history of storm chasing and the evolution of broadcast technology in Oklahoma.

Chris Lee started at Channel 5 in 1977, just as storm chasing was beginning to intersect with television news. Inspired by scientific chasers from the Severe Storms Lab in Norman, TV crews began adapting their methods to bring real-time storm footage to the public. Lee vividly remembers the deadly tornado outbreak of April 10, 1979, that devastated Lawton and Wichita Falls, killing 50 people. It was one of his first major storm coverage experiences.

Early storm chasing was raw and risky. Station wagons outfitted with hail catchers, two-way radios, and even aircraft radar mounted on cars were questionable.

Before the internet and cellphones, live coverage meant finding a hilltop within 70 miles of a microwave tower or waiting hours to reach a satellite truck to broadcast video back to the station. Still photos were transmitted using modems, and one image could take over five minutes to send.

Lee was part of a pioneering team that constantly improvised to stay ahead. Their general manager supported risky tech upgrades, investing in $3,000 GPS units that only displayed coordinates. One of their engineers, Jerry Hart, even developed the first system to auto-overlay weather warnings on maps—something viewers now take for granted.

The first attempts at live video from the field were rough, using Windows Media Encoder and modems to stream grainy footage at 15 frames per second. But it was a breakthrough. Eventually, cell bonding with multiple SIM cards allowed clean, real-time HD video from moving vehicles, a far cry from the analog delays of the past.

Lee recalled the dangers of storm chasing, especially at night, with delayed radar data and poor communication. He shared stories of dodging hail to protect delicate satellite trucks.
