A Commons watchdog has found five Conservative MPs breached the code of conduct and attempted to “improperly” influence legal proceedings related to their disgraced former colleague Charlie Elphicke, the Tory MP for Dover, who was jailed for two years in 2020 for sexually assaulting two women.

The Commons Committee on Standards said that letters sent by the MPs were “an attempt improperly to influence judicial proceedings” – finding they had all breached the code of conduct.

The MPs’ behaviour was found to have “caused significant damage to the reputation and integrity” of the House of Commons.

“We have always looked to the UK for good, sensible policies. Unfortunately that has not been the case for the Covid pandemic."

“It is leading to disaster as we can see in the numbers. I follow the numbers daily in the UK and I am extremely dismayed to see the very rapid rate of increase in infections in a population which is vaccinated like we are.”

“I believe that the strategy of herd immunity is actually murderous: I think that’s a word we should use, because that is what it is; it is knowledge that you are doing something that will result in thousands, and in some cases tens of thousands of people dying."

"It is a disastrous policy, it’s been clear that that’s been the case for some time, and to continue to espouse that policy is unconscionable.”

A nurse who cared for the prime minister when he was seriously ill with coronavirus has resigned, hitting out at the government's 1% pay rise offer and what she says is its lack of respect for the profession.

Jenny McGee, who looked after Boris Johnson in intensive care at St Thomas' Hospital in April 2020, said: "We're not getting the respect and now pay that we deserve."

"Lots of nurses felt that the government hadn't led very effectively, the indecisiveness, so many mixed messages," she added.

"It was just very upsetting."

Boris Johnson has broken the promise he made on becoming Prime Minister, to fix Social Care - as predicted, it isn't in the Queen's Speech.

“I am announcing now – on the steps of Downing Street – that we will fix the crisis in social care once and for all with a clear plan we have prepared”

- Boris Johnson, 24th July 2019

My reading of Labour's success in the West of England Metro mayor election, and in Cambridgeshire, and councils in Chipping Norton (David Cameron's old seat), Tunbridge Wells and elsewhere in the South East, is that centre right one nation conservatives are starting to turn against the "rightening" of the Tory Party. I think the Sleaze and Johnson's antics do cut through to some, what I would call "decent" Tories - they do exist.

So while Johnson is attracting some of the socially right wing red wall voters with his nationalistic xenophobia and worse, some of the centre ground are moving towards Starmer's Labour in a way they never would under previous management.

You'll never hear Laura Kuenssberg say that, obviously.
