Ukrainian forces have launched an offensive into the region of Russia. This was first reported on Tuesday, but now that more information has come in and fighting is ongoing, an update is probably due.
Ukrainian forces, following the partial withdrawal from Kursk to more parallel lines and concerns that Russia would use its forces to launch an attack into Ukraine's Sumy region, launched an adjacent offensive into Belgorod, near the towns of Demidovka and Grafovka, moving heavy equipment and troops across the border. The russian district announced an evacuation order the same day.
Foreign correspondent Oliver Carroll for The Economist reported that, through his sources, that the operation was "3 weeks in the making" and conducted to create a buffer zone along the border similar to Russia's plans for Ukraine. He also reported they were several kilometers deep into Russia on Tuesday.
Russian sources have posted corroborating video of Ukrainian columns in the area as well as combat footage.
President Zelensky's office confirmed the ongoing operation as well, stating Ukraine is taking proactive steps to counter Russian troop buildups.
As of this morning, Ukrainian forces had pushed beyond the 'dragons teeth' fortifications, fighting for the town of Demidovka, and an air strike "completely destroyed" the main command post of Russia's 3rd Motorized Rifle Division in the town.
The Air Force destroyed a key supply bridge at Grafovka, isolating the town logistically (corroborated by russian sources). Russians in an eastern town reported a bombardment of drones and artillery.
All in all, this appears to be an operation to bring the fight to Russia instead of waiting for an invasion of Sumy, and spread out Russia's defenses that are concentrated in Kursk to the north and Kharkiv to the south. The international border in the area is very jagged (pictured) and would be exposed to land grabs in any potential ceasefire.
