We will be touching on a lot of these topics this month at our upcoming meeting. For the meeting coming up at the end of the month we will have a guest speaker Meteorologist Kerri Copello who is also the Emergency Management Specialist with Phoebe. She will be giving a briefing on what we can expect from this coming up hurricane season and the benefits of ham radio for hospital emergency management. I highly encourage all ham operators to come out to this one. Hope to see you all there.

The first step of preparing for hurricanes is to know your risk. Find out today what types of water and wind hazards could happen where you live. Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem. Impacts from wind and water can be felt hundreds of miles inland, and significant impacts can occur regardless of the storm’s strength. Know if you live in an area prone to flooding, if you live in an evacuation zone, and identify any structural weaknesses in your home.

The Georgia Auxcomm CommEx was today and turned out to be a great success. Myself, KM4SAG and Jamie Sullivan, KJ4OPY set up a Winlink peer to peer station at the Camilla Fire Department Drill Field to communicate with the State Operating Centers in Atlanta and Forsyth and check in on SSB while the city and county fire departments were doing drills of their own on site. A couple of goofs were made but were quickly corrected and was a successful exercise. If you’ve never done an emcomm exercise, I highly encourage any ham operators to do one. It’s a great way to test your equipment and make sure everything works and it’s always best to have a plan when things go south.
