18/07/2022

If you haven’t watched the 2022 Detroit Tigers much this season (show of hands … all of you, got it), the whole thing’s been kind of a mess after the Yankees prevented Miguel Cabrera from getting his 3,000th hit.

Supposedly powered by offseason additions like Javier Báez, Tucker Barnhart and Eduardo Rodriguez, as well as tippy-top prospects Spencer Torkelson and Riley Greene, the Tigers of now have looked a lot like the Tigers of old. Rodriguez has left the team to deal with personal issues, Báez has been his erratic self, Torkelson has been historically bad for a top pick, and though Greene has lived up to the billing, he only recently arrived, breaking his foot in spring training. And cheating AJ Hinch has gotten a front-row seat to the catastrophe. What a shame!

But one thing has gone right: the bullpen. From pure rentals to discoveries with multiple years of control ahead of them, the Tigers are flush with the most unpredictable jewels of all, overloaded with relievers. Yankees on line one?

On the one hand, the Tigers intended to contend this year (even though they’re not), and would have to be really convinced to sell bullpen assets who have an extended amount of team control. A 2022-23 free agent isn’t worth keeping tied down, but someone under contract through 2027 really could be around for the next elite Tigers team.

On the other hand … come on. Come onnnnnnn. Let’s have some fun! Trade people! Turn more players into fungible bullpen assets after they leave! Come onnnnnnnnnnnn!

While tempted to put veteran hurler Wily Peralta on this list, especially considering he’s a free agent at the end of 2022, his numbers positively scream that a regression is incoming (1.410 WHIP, 2.16 ERA/3.71 FIP) once he gets off the IL. Even though he’d likely be available for a song, why would the Yankees rush to clear a roster spot for someone whose best days are likely behind him?

Goodbye to Gregory Soto, too. As the Tigers’ All-Star representative for the second consecutive season, his reputation will lead to inflation on the trade market — and he’s fine, but not fantastic.

There’s no guarantee that two of these three names will be available, but that’s no reason for the Yankees not to place the call and get the ball rolling. After all, Clay Holmes was somehow an option last summer, despite being under control through 2024.

3 Detroit Tigers bullpen arms Yankees should call about at 2022 MLB Trade Deadline

DETROIT, MI – JUNE 11: Michael Fulmer #32 of the Detroit Tigers pitches against the Toronto Blue Jays at Comerica Park on June 11, 2022, in Detroit, Michigan. (Photo by Duane Burleson/Getty Images)

3. Michael Fulmer

If you’re keeping score at home, Michael Fulmer is … AVAILABLE. He was available when the 2021 season ended. He was available when camp broke. Even if the Tigers intended to attempt an on-the-fly build-n-sell, he probably should’ve been available, too.

Considering how impressive Fulmer’s been in a relief role dating back to 2021’s Opening Day, it’s somewhat shocking the stuck-in-the-mud Tigers of yesteryear never pulled off a deal sending the righty to a contender. Clearly, they envisioned bigger and better things this season. Either way, now’s the time to deal, as no shine has come off Fulmer’s right arm.

The trade package … might be smaller this year, though. After all, a year and two months of control far exceeds 2022’s second half in length. Fulmer, still just 29, strikes out a batter per inning (33 in 33.1, as of this writing), and while his ERA and FIP clash a bit (1.89 vs. 3.23), his WHIP indicates he’s limiting base runners as best he can (1.020).

His Statcast metrics are also off the charts; he’s in the 97th percentile of xBA, 94th of xWOBA, and 97th of xSLG. His hard-hit rate (60th percentile) could stand to be improved, but there’s basically nobody in baseball with more impressive expected slugging numbers. All indications are he controls all he can control, and could even earn better results down the stretch.

Even with a bidding war in place, there’s no reason Fulmer should cost more than two significant prospects. The Yankees should engage immediately, and while they’re on the phone, they should also try to get even crazier…

While Red Sox Twitter (and, fine, the rest of MLB Twitter as well) delights in making memes out of Rafael Devers‘ fatherhood whenever Yankees ace Gerrit Cole comes to play, the relationship between the two men seems far less contentious.

After Thursday’s showdown at Fenway Park, won 6-5 after the Yankees bullpen held on in the wake of not one, but two Devers shots against the right-hander, Cole seemed baffled by the slugger’s success against him, and took a lighthearted approach in the postgame scrum.

In more dire straits — and after a loss rather than a victory — Cole’s cutesy, “Anybody got any ideas?” quip might not have gone over so well. In this instance, though, the press corps was able to yuk it up, Cole was able to blow off some steam, and Jack Curry was able to dust off an apt comparison to a similar David Cone quote from the Yankees’ 2000 season.

Again, the only difference there was Cone was genuinely left in the lurch, toiling to a 6.00+ ERA in his final season in the Bronx. Cole evoking that low moment, even accidentally, made Yankee fans of a certain age feel worse than they already did about his chances at Fenway.

Don’t call it “ownership” or “paternity” if you’re talking to Devers, though. The Red Sox slugger makes it look effortless on the field, but he doesn’t seem to want a reputation as a Stone Cole Killer, especially considering these rivals have to face off 12 more times in 2022.

Speaking to Spanish-language outlet ZDeportes, Devers diminished his success against Cole. Rather, the All-Star said, he’s had some good luck.

“Gerrit Cole is one of the best pitchers in the Major Leagues. I’ve had good luck against him, that’s [just] the game. I’ve simply had the joy of connecting with some good pitches.” (My translation)

Very professional, humble thing for Devers to say. I like him! https://t.co/CkyZk5LnZM

Yankees’ Gerrit Cole gets kudos from Red Sox Rafael Devers

What a kind soul, who’s absolutely going to continue mashing Cole whether he’s humble about it or not.

The one thing Cole has on his rival, at the moment, is that he only drills homers off him. No measly singles, doubles, or triples for this infuriatingly good Red Sox! In 23 career at-bats against Cole, Devers has seven hits, but six of those have left the yard. Focus on the good times! Focus on the eight strikeouts, not the 1.087 SLG. My word.

The next time these two men do battle will be Sunday in the Bronx (as long as Devers’ back doesn’t flare up in between). Cole is coming off possibly his best start of the season, a throwback game to his Astros days in which he touched 101 on his final pitch and breezed through the Reds with relative ease (in, uh, a game the Yankees ultimately lost).

Will Devers’ luck continue when he’s confronted with the short porch? Yeah. Dammit. Probably.

It’s skill. It’s not luck. It’s skill. Cole just has to hope his home fans can save him.

Since the start of the pandemic, we have kept you posted on what the Yankees have been up to on social media. Now that the 2022 regular season season is well underway, we’ll see more action from our favorite players and Yankee figures. Here’s your weekly update on what your favorite Yankees have been doing on social media!

Matt Carpenter is loving his look in a Yankees uniform

The Yanks made a surprising move this past week when they brought the 36-year-old Matt Carpenter aboard. However, he wasted no time warming himself up to the fans. He scored two runs in his first appearance and then blasted a homer in his second game with the team. We can’t forget about his mustache, either!

The Jose Trevino Game

Just as they practiced when he was a kid. Jose and his late father used to train for moments like this one in the backyard. A walk-off hit in a Yankees uniform is something they’ve always dreamed of, until it became a reality. In one of the coolest moments of the season thus far, Trevino knocked in the game-winning run for New York on what would have been his dad’s birthday. This is why we love baseball.

Luis Gil reports a successful Tommy John surgery

After undergoing season-ending Tommy John surgery, the 23-year-old pitcher says everything went well and he will give “101 percent” of himself when he is able to return to the mound. Gil only threw four innings in the majors this season, but had a 3.07 ERA through six starts last season for the Yanks. He has a long recovery ahead of him, but we wish him the best of luck and look forward to seeing him back out there!

hello Fans I am very excited because the operation was a success thank God everything went as God wanted it I am very grateful to God and I want to tell him that I will give 101% of myself so that the recovery goes better than expected in the name of God

— Luis Gil () May 25, 2022

Jasson Dominguez hype train

The 19-year-old top outfield prospect has been on a tear as of late for the Tampa Tarpons. In the month of May, he’s hitting .313 with 4 home runs and 15 RBI. In those 22 games since the first of the month, he also owns a 181 wRC+ and a .991 OPS. He’s been very impressive so far and hopes to keep it going.

MLB.com: In case you missed it, there was a minor move on Sunday as catcher Rob Brantly elected free agency instead of an assignment to the minors … and then re-signed with the Yankees.

New York Post | Dan Martin: With Nestor Cortes’ continued emergence in the Yankees’ rotation, the team is starting to look ahead at monitoring his innings ahead of a potential postseason run. Cortes has never thrown more than 119 innings in any professional season and the team is going to keep an eye on him with him looking like someone who will be penciled into a postseason rotation.

New York Post | Dan Martin: Nothing is truly going right for Aaron Hicks this season. While his struggles are well documented, Sunday he actually struck a couple balls well, only for Rays fielders to make nice plays.

CBS Sports: In injury news, pitcher Domingo Germán could be nearing a rehab assignment soon. Having not pitched in game action all season due to a shoulder injury, Germán has been pitching to live hitters at the Yankees’ complex in Tampa and might be ready to take the next step soon.

CBS Sports: Pitcher Stephen Ridings impressed in his brief time in the big leagues last season, but he’s been plagued by injury since, and it appears he’s had another setback. Ridings had been throwing off flat ground, trying to rehab after a shoulder injury, but on Saturday, manager Aaron Boone confirmed that Ridings was no longer throwing. He said surgery wasn’t yet the move, but it is another step in the wrong direction for Ridings.

17/07/2022

At long last, we’ve reached a scheduled off-day for the Yankees. If you’ll recall, the team set out on a stretch where they had to play 23 games in 22 days near the beginning of the month — some rainouts changed how that mileage played out, but at the end of the day they got to the same point. They went 15-8 in that run, ending in a disappointing fashion by dropping the last two against Tampa Bay to split a four-game set, but it was overall a very good month for the team. They were the top team in MLB for most of it, and even though the Dodgers just surpassed them for the best overall record the Yankees are still top dogs in the American League. That’s a strong spot to be in heading into June.

There won’t be any baseball to cover around here today, and it’ll be a similarly chill day for the site. Matt brings us the latest results from the Yankees’ rivals last night, Estevão talks about how Aaron Hicks and Joey Gallo need to step up to stay in a thinned out lineup, and I’ll be around to drop the latest mailbag request.

Today’s Matchup:

Off-day.

Fun Questions:

1. Will Aaron Judge still be leading MLB in home runs by the All-Star Break?

2. Who do you think takes the NBA Finals, Warriors or Celtics?
