Today marks nine years since Lionel Messi scored the 91st and final goal of his incredible 2012.

59 in La Liga, 13 in the Champions League, five in the Copa del Rey, two in the Super Cup and 12 with Argentina.

The previous record for goals in a calendar year was 85, set by Germany legend Gerd Muller in 1972.

After breaking the record, Messi sent Muller a number 10 Barcelona shirt, signed "with respect and admiration”.

A class act on and off the pitch.

2012 was also the year Messi became the first player in history to win the Ballon d'Or four times in succession.

The Copa del Rey was the only trophy Barcelona won in 2012, but that should take nothing away from Messi’s individual brilliance.

His goals towards the end of the year set Barca on their way to being crowned La Liga champions in 2012-13.

Lionel Messi has done some of the most incredible things in football.

But 2012 was just something else.
