The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has announced the publication of the final rule establishing a nonessential experimental population of sihek (Guam kingfisher) on Palmyra Atoll, which is co-managed by The Nature Conservancy and the Service.

Under section 10(j) of the Endangered Species Act, captive-bred sihek will be released to Palmyra Atoll as an experimental population in an effort to support the reintroduction of the at-risk species and foster long-term recovery.

Critically endangered Javan green magpie chicks hatched in September...

In Indonesia, a culture of keeping caged birds as a status symbol has seen huge areas of forest fall silent as millions of birds are taken from the wild.

As the birds become rarer, their value increases, leaving many species on the brink of disappearing altogether. The Javan green magpie is now believed to number less than 100 individuals in the wild and is listed as critically endangered by BirdLife International and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Conservationists at the zoo are working closely with field partners in Indonesia at the Cikananga Conservation Breeding Centre, to breed and protect populations of bird species most threatened by the crisis.
