Stopped by my favorite tackle shop today and decided to pick up a few of those niche baits. Majority of this stuff will be used to target fish on my BFS setups or on finesse gear.

Top 5 Lures: Crush City
Number 1: Mayor
Favorite Colors: Gizzard Shad, Electric Shad, Shad, Green Shad, Pro Blue Red Pearl, Sexy Shad
Favorite Techniques/Ways to Rig: Underspin, Swim Jig Trailer, Spinnerbait Trailer, Jig Head Swim Bait, Belly weighted Swim Bait, Wobblehead
The crush city mayor is my favorite bait from the crush city line. This may come as a surprise to many because it’s just a paddle tail swimbait but this has completely changed my fishing. The mayor has completely changed my swim jig fishing. Before the mayor I barely ever fished a swim jig, now I don’t go anywhere without it and 95% of the time the mayor is my trailer. I have so much confidence in it on an underspin and it has caught me a ton of fish especially during the toughest times of the year to catch fish. I literally can’t believe I’m putting this on the internet but the most underrated way to fish the mayor is on a Wobblehead because it makes it look like a baitfish is feeding on the bottom and stirring up the bottom. The mayor is soft enough to give it a subtle action even when fished slowly on bottom. What makes the mayor stand out from other paddle tail swimbaits on the market is durability. I probably caught 50-60 fish on a mayor during 2025 and didn’t even go through one pack. You can’t say that for many other soft plastics on the market that isn’t made from the stretchy, elaztech-like material.

Top 5 Lures: Crush City
Number 2: Bronco Bug
Favorite Colors: Green Pumpkin, Green Pumpkin Blue, Alabama Craw, Candy Bug, Black Red Flake
Favorite Techniques/Ways to Rig: Flipping, Punching, Texas Rig, Jig Trailer, Wobblehead
When the crush city soft plastics were released the bronco bug was the one I was most excited for, which for someone who doesn’t flip and pitch a ton, it might come as a surprise. The thing about the bronco bug that made me the most excited was how different it was when representing that craw profile and all of the different ways that I could use it. The bronco bug excels in many different situations and techniques, but it has surprisingly good action while swimming as well. It’s a subtle action that could be used for many different horizontal presentations as well. I am typically using it for bottom contact techniques and have caught tons of fish on it. Some of the bigger fish I’ve caught on it has been punching pads and using it on a Wobblehead. The biggest bass I’ve ever caught at burr oak (my true home lake) came using the bronco bug on the back of a Wobblehead on main lake points in the heart of summer. Like the majority of the other crush city plastics the bronco bug is fairly durable and seems to hold up for multiple fish catches as well.

Top 5 Lures: Crush City
Number 3: Freeloader
Favorite Colors: Gizzard Shad, Sungill
Favorite Techniques/Ways to Rig: Strolling, Powershot, Chatterbait Trailer
The freeloader has been one of the most consistent fish catchers for me from the crush city line. The freeloader has been a bait that I turned to when things get tough and it always seems to come through and put fish in the boat. The freeloader is the perfect size for strolling in a lot of the lakes that I fish, therefore, I use it for strolling much more than the mooch minnow. This is also why I’m excited for the larger size of the mooch minnow to be released. Not only does the freeloader excel strolling, it has been the one single bait that has hooked me on the powershot. The gizzard shad color does a good job of imitating shad where the sungill color is the perfect bluegill imitation in a lot of the lakes that I fish. I know a lot of people really like the freeloader as a chatterbait trailer, and it does well for me, but there are other trailers on the market that I prefer. With the release of different sizes of the freeloader, I think it will become more used as a chatterbait trailer in the 5 inch size for me. The 5 inch seems to have much more tail action behind a chatterbait than the 4 inch size, which is what I look for in a pintail style trailer.

Top 5 Lures: Crush City
Number 4: Cleanup Craw
Favorite Colors: Green Pumpkin, Alabama Craw, Candy Craw
Favorite Techniques/Ways to Rig: Jig Trailer, Texas Rig, Wobblehead
The cleanup craw is a fantastic craw style bait in the crush city line of soft plastics. It is one of the 4-5 craw that I turn to as a jig trailer and a Texas rigged soft plastics. One of my favorite features of the cleanup craw other than the typical craw profile and action, is the durability of the cleanup craw. While using it as a jig trailer, I was able to catch several fish on one craw without having to replace it. The only reason the cleanup craw didn’t make it higher on this list is the true versatility of the lures ahead of it.

Top 5 Lures: Crush City
Number 5: Mooch Minnow
Favorite Colors: Gizzard Shad, Electric Shad, Shad, Sexy Shad, Pearl White
Favorite Techniques/Ways to Rig: Strolling, Dropshot, Trailer for Mini max chatter bait
The Crush City line of soft plastics seemingly has taken the bass fishing world by storm. It has been one that I have been really excited about and have used basically from the time that they launched, so it’s only fitting to kick of my top 5 lures by brand using them. Coming in at number 5 is the mooch minnow. Initially, the mooch minnow was one that I thought I would end up liking more than I did due to how versatile it is and the material that it is made from. However, I felt as if its size held it back in my arsenal just a bit. Recently they have released a few other sizes and I have picked up several different colors in some of the other sizes to see if my perception changes, however I still feel that it is a really good option for strolling, dropshotting, or using as a trailer for a downsized chatter bait like a mini max. It has caught quite a bit of fish for me in each of those techniques.

I’ve been playing around with some designs to just make something different. This is one that I’ve come up with and finally had the chance to water test it to see the action. I was pleasantly surprised with the action and this gives me some ideas to expand on this concept.

Recently on a Instagram poll I asked if I should do my top 5 lures by brand and it was voted unanimously a yes! So on Monday December 15th, we kick off the first brand crush city line. How this will work is each day we countdown from 5 to 1, my favorite lures from that brand. Since crush city is a soft plastic line, I will give my favorite ways to rig them/techniques used to fish them as well as my favorite colors in each bait.
Feel free to leave a comment for suggestions on brands that you would like to see!

The colder weather months give me some cabin fever and I get the itch so I play around with some lure creation. This thing screams shad spawn to me and that’s one bite that I miss!

Top Lures of 2025
Number 1: Chatterbait
From left to right (all 3/8 oz.)
jackhammer in green pumpkin shad
Evo elite in glitterbomb
Evo elite mini max in glitterbomb and electric shad
mini max in pearl ghost
The chatterbait is my favorite lure of all time for obvious reasons. It catches numbers and it catches giants. Beyond that it is one of the most versatile lures that you can use. This year the chatterbait shined in every aspect of fishing and every time period throughout the year. Early in the year I caught some true giants on it fishing it different than most people would. Throughout the middle part of the year it was the single most consistent fish catcher in my boat. It’s a lure that I have tied on at all times and most of the time I have multiple tied on at the same time. The one single chatterbait that stood out was the 3/8 oz. jackhammer in green pumpkin shad paired with a 4.5” or 5.5” s***k shad in Tennessee magic.

Number 2: Spinnerbait
From left to right in the picture (all are 3/8 oz.)
SV-3 in Hasu
blade in white and chartreuse
pulsator in bombshell shad
hammered shattered glass in silver
The spinnerbait is a lure that has always been a major player in my arsenal especially in the prespawn and in the fall. However this year I kept the spinnerbait on the deck of my boat much longer than I do in normal years and it paid off in a big way. I was able to capitalize on a major fry guarder bite in the late spring that produced large numbers of fish and some really quality bags. The majority of those bites came on a spinnerbait. This year I really branched out in my spinnerbait fishing and tried some different brands than I have traditionally used and it kept me fishing a spinnerbait during times of the year where I wouldn’t even pull it out of the rod locker. I believe I caught fish on 8-9 different brands of spinnerbaits this year. Some of those are ones that have always produced but many were brands that I have never used or haven’t used in a few years. The only reason this didn’t make it to number one on my list was because of the sheer dominance number 1 played in 2025.

Top Lures of 2025
Number 3: Jig
From left to right
3/8 oz. Tour level pitching jigs in the go to, Alabama craw, and definite watermelon.
Custom made 3/8 oz. Jig in a custom color
3/8 oz. Luke clausen compact pitching jig in the go to color
3/8 oz. Scott Canterbury Compact flipping jig in Canterbury craw
A jig seems like it’s always in my top 3 lures of each year simply because it’s one of my favorite lures and it catches a ton of fish. It also catches big fish! This year I caught fish on a ton of different jigs but find myself going back to the dirty jigs pitching and compact pitching jigs the most. I also spend some time during the off-season dabbling around and creating some of my own custom stuff and this year one of those in particular shined! Jigs specifically shined around hard cover with boat docks being the number one area for success. In 2025 I didn’t catch any true giants on a jig which kept it from showing up in the top 2.
